The Orlando Magic have a chance to close out the top-seeded Detroit Pistons Wednesday

The Orlando Magic are one victory from pulling one of the biggest upsets in NBA postseason history.

The eight-seeded Magic lead the No. 1 seeded Detroit Pistons 3-1 in their first-round series in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They can close out the series Wednesday at Little Caesars Arena.

After the Game 4 victory, Magic coach Jamahl Mosley had a special message for the players in the locker room. He told the story of Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant from the 2009 NBA Finals when the Los Angeles Lakers led the Orlando Magic 2-0.

"So I was gonna put a video up," Mosley said to the team. "Y'all remember the Kobe Bryant one? Up 2-0, what was the statement? Job's not done. That's reality."

The Magic are trying to become the seventh No. 8 seed to win a playoff series against the No. 1. The 2023 Miami Heat were the last team to do it. That Heat team made a magical run to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Denver Nuggets.

"We put ourselves in position," Mosley said. "The job is not done. We've got to go to Detroit and find a way to get it done there. Next man up, that's the mentality."

The Magic are smart by taking Bryant's motto. The Lakers eventually defeated the Magic that year in five games. So far, the Magic are remaining calm instead of getting too confident. After winning Game 1, many players felt they were too confident the next game. It led to the Magic's only loss of the series so far.

The plan is to win the series sooner than later, so the Pistons are unable to gain any momentum. Even if the Magic lose Wednesday, they still would host the key Game 6 at Kia Center.

"Learning from Game 2 is realizing you can't let your guard down or relax at any point in the game—first half or second half," Magic forward Paolo Banchero. "You can't give up big runs. You have to know they're going to come out with a heightened level of energy, effort, and desperation. We need to have the same amount, if not more."
