Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner is ready for the challenge ahead.
The Orlando Magic will have some new leadership in the building next season as Sean Sweeney is set to take over as the franchise’s next head coach.
Sweeney, whose recent job as the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs concluded following the latter’s loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. Now, he will take his first head coaching job and try to elevate the Magic to new heights.
With a core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and Desmond Bane, Orlando has proven it can make the playoffs, but the first round has proven to be an insurmountable task, even before acquiring Bane. In two of the last three seasons, the Magic have made it to Game 7 in the first round, only to fall both times.
Recently, Wagner met up with HoopsHype to discuss his excitement for Sweeney to coach the team.
"For sure, it's very exciting for all of us. We've played pretty much the same core together for five years, and it's gonna be a lot of change in the building next year. I haven't met [Sean] Sweeney] yet in person, but just texting back and forth, you can feel the excitement from him too.
"And it speaks to his work ethic as well as character," Wagner added. 'Getting a job that young is not easy. It hasn't been too much; he's still in the Finals. I also want to respect that, but we're all really excited for next year."
According to Wagner, the sting of being unable to advance in the playoffs has been a learning lesson, and one that the team will build off of.
"The hope is that you learn these lessons once, and then you've got it down the next year," Wagner said. "I can just say, we got a really talented roster, we got guys with high character and dudes that want to work hard and get better, and that's a really good starting point. And every great team has gone through disappointments in the playoffs.
"But, at the end of the day, you gotta get the job done, and I thought we were really close to it this last year, getting over that hump of winning a playoff series and finding a way to win a game on the road," he added. "These are baby steps on the journey, but those are things you gotta learn, especially as a young team. And, no, all we can do is kind of control each day, each moment as well as we can. As I said, prepare well for next year and then, yeah, hopefully take that next step together."
