The Orlando Magic took Game 1 from the Detroit Pistons in their first round playoff series, and Jamahl Mosley talked about what worked for his team.
With a 1-0 lead on their side, the Orlando Magic will face the Detroit Pistons for Game 2 of their first-round playoff series on Wednesday.
During Tuesday’s practice, Magic coach Jamahl Mosley talked about the importance of not relishing a Game 1 victory too much.
“Yeah, I mean it's one game at a time,” Mosley said. “It's the reality that yeah, you did get the game one win, but now you have to go and figure out how to get a game two. And there's going to be, obviously, the positive talk about what you've done and thinking there's reasons to celebrate, but at the end of the day, it's one game.
“And that's the most important piece that we've talked about,” he added. “Just taking it one game at a time.”
Sunday’s 112-101 win marked the Magic’s first playoff victory on the road under Mosley. Yet, he believes there is no change between gameplanning with a 1-0 series lead opposed to being down 1-0.
“There's no real changes in that regard, " he said. “I think it's about one game, you see what they're going to do and how they're going to come into play and you do the things that worked well within the game. And then you see the things that hurt you during the game.
“So, there's always going to be adjustments made because you've got to try to see what you can do better at in that game, and that's what we're going to look at doing.”
For Mosley, there were two aspects of Game 1 that proved crucial to the success of his team.
“The physicality of the game,” he said. “The physicality of the series is going to be a big thing. But I think dialing into the game plan, the intentionality of everything we were trying to do and accomplish throughout the game was there.
“And then just the chemistry and the togetherness of our group, the communication that they had with one another, the things they saw on the floor and the poise that they possessed in any run during the game.”
The chemistry and togetherness Orlando displayed was paramount given what the team had gone through in the regular season. An unwavering sense of camaraderie helped the Magic, and much of it was instilled by the coaching staff.
“It says a lot about this group,” Mosley said. “It says a lot about our coaches, that they've done a great job in the midst of everything, that they've kept these guys believing, knowing how good we can be when we're all together. But just knowing that you've got to lift up the guy next to you at any given time.
“When guys were injured or out, they were still part of the group,” he added. “And I think that says a lot about the resiliency of our guys. But it says a lot about our coaches, who've done a tremendous job of keeping these guys together, keeping them prepared.”
