ORLANDO — After firing coach Jamahl Mosley following a first-round playoff series loss to the Detroit Pistons in early May, the Orlando Magic had work to do in making sure they selected the right coach to lead the franchise next.

While multiple names gained traction, San Antonio Spurs associate head coach Sean Sweeney ended up coming out of the pack and getting the job. On Thursday, the Magic held the introductory press conference for Sweeney inside the AdventHealth Training Center, and President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman was asked what specifically made Sweeney the right man for the job.

"Well, it's like coaching. It's not a specific thing," Weltman said. "It's the whole. I remember when I was a young guy once and an owner that I work for said, 'What do you think makes up a good coach? What's the one thing, if you could put your finger on it?’ And I said, there is no one thing, it's a thousand little things. And I think that you have to start with the command of the material, the subject matter, your knowledge of the game, your ability to access that knowledge quickly in the spur of the moment.

"And I think Sean's foundation is that's where it started," Weltman added. "But everything that he talked about was how you teach those things, how you break those things down into smaller parts that organizationally we can measure and how you bake that into the improvement of our team and not just try to win a game or win a season, but really sort of build a program. And so, you know, Sean had really, I thought, like comprehensive perspective on how to execute all of that, you know, starting from the minutia and growing it out to the bigger picture."

Sweeney comes to Orlando as a rookie head coach and is tasked with elevating a young team that has not fully realized its potential yet. The Magic have been able to become consistent participants in the playoffs, but they have never exceeded the second round.

For Weltman, there is a belief that Sweeney's leadership along with the talent on the roster will ultimately elevate the Magic to where they want to go.

"Honestly, I don't think I don't want to speak for Sean, but I don't look at it as a question of fairness," Weltman said. "It's.. We want to be playing. I always say we believe in this group, we think this group has tremendous potential. You know, a lot of this is how you approach the season, how you approach the big picture. A lot of what Sean's talking about is what equals success in April, May, June.

"And those are the things that we have to get to first," Weltman added. "This is a little more coachy than management. But if you take care of those things, the wins will follow. And we do believe we have the players. We have the timeline and Sean at the helm to get us to where we need to get. 

"I don't want to talk about what's fair and what's not fair, because honestly, that has nothing to do with this business," Weltman continued. "We just know what we need to do. And it's up to us to get it done."
