Following a dominant preseason finale, Orlando's staff pushes their star forward to master defensive reads and aggressive interior scoring as the team navigates early roster injuries.
The Orlando Magic won their preseason final preseason game with a 136-115 win against the Miami Heat on Friday. Head coach Sean Sweeney was happy with the win, citing the team's defense, but had to speak about a few key players leaving with injury and turning the page to the regular season.
Here is everything Sweeney had to say after the major preseason win over the Heat.
On transitioning into the game against Miami: Sweeney said the Magic gradually adjusted to Miami’s pace, particularly in transition, as the game progressed. He emphasized the importance of getting back defensively while praising the team’s ball movement and ability to create offense by sharing the ball.
On injuries to Jase Richardson, Noah Penda and Franz Wagner: Sweeney reported that Richardson experienced back soreness, Penda had some tightness in his right hamstring and Wagner dealt with soreness in his right shoulder. He added that all three players would be reevaluated.
On overcoming deficits and responding to adversity in the preseason: Sweeney highlighted the value of facing adversity and learning to respond under pressure. He said the Magic showed the ability to reset and adjust to challenging situations throughout the game.
On Nikola Vucevic and Goga Bitadze in the backup center role: Sweeney praised both veteran centers for their contributions on the offensive and defensive side of the floor. He highlighted Vucevic’s offensive versatility, communication and rebounding, while noting Bitadze’s work on the boards, spacing and defensive ability. Sweeney said both players have made positive impacts and that their roles will depend on the team’s needs.
On Desmond Bane finding his rhythm and taking a high volume of 3-pointers: Sweeney stressed the importance of players gaining confidence and finding their rhythm during preseason games. He praised Bane’s aggressiveness and ability to create quality looks from beyond the arc, adding that the guard should continue building on that performance.
On Paolo Banchero balancing perimeter play and drawing fouls inside: Sweeney emphasized the importance of Banchero remaining aggressive on every possession. He praised Banchero’s ability to attack the paint and draw fouls while also creating opportunities on the perimeter. Sweeney said the key is reading the defense and adjusting his approach to what the game presents.
On turning the focus toward the regular season: Sweeney said the team must maintain the habits established throughout training camp and continue strengthening its foundation. He emphasized the importance of building on that progress and adding further layers to the team’s development.
