Orlando Magic head coach Sean Sweeney knows how important trust is, especially in his position.
ORLANDO — On June 18, Orlando Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman sat alongside Sean Sweeney in a room full of reporters, players and staff to introduce Sweeney as the 16th head coach in franchise history.
For Sweeney, this is a new experience, as he will be a head coach for the first time after spending well over a decade as an assistant. Sweeney’s experience speaks for itself, but he understands what it will take to build rapport and trust with his new players.
"Well, trust is earned," Sweeney said. "You know, trust is being conscientious and consistent every day. The better I am at being consistent and being who I'm supposed to be, the more they can trust me. And then it's reciprocated.
"If you be yourself, be the best version of yourself, it's easier to trust," he added. "And so I think just as a head coach or as a teammate or as someone that, you know, you're in a relationship with, trust is earned. And you have to earn that trust by being who you're supposed to be each and every day."
Sweeney has had multiple stops with different organizations, and he has used his demeanor and ability to connect with players to forge a strong reputation around the league. From 2018-2021, Sweeney was an assistant with the Detroit Pistons, and during that time, he used intensity and care in his approach, and it led to former Pistons guard Reggie Jackson to describe Sweeney in a profane but caring manner.
"At the end of the day, you know, Reggie Jackson, who I coached in Detroit, said, 'You're the first [expletive] that I love,'" Sweeney said. "And if my players said that about me, I'd be happy about that.
"But no, I hope they say that there's someone here who supports them, there's someone here who's got their back, who wants them to do well as individuals, but most importantly, who wants the team to do well," Sweeney added. "Because if we do well as a team, everyone else gets trickled down from that. Success comes from that."
Though Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs make up the nucleus of the team, Sweeney will be tasked with forging a connection with everyone on the roster. He made it clear that upon getting the job, communication with multiple players commenced.
That communication will be paramount moving forward as Sweeney works to elevate a franchise that has not won a playoff series since 2010.
