Paolo Banchero opened up about his relationship with Franz Wagner, describing his Magic teammate as one of the best players he has ever had the opportunity to play alongside in the interview. Here’s a recap of this portion in the interview.
Banchero praised Wagner’s combination of size, athleticism, defensive ability and basketball IQ, stating that despite standing around 6-foot-10, Wagner has the skill set and movement of a guard. The two have continued working together during the offseason, including workouts in Los Angeles as they look to build even more chemistry, a valuable trait needed to work towards their goal of winning a championship together with the Orlando Magic.
With both players entering another season together in Orlando, Banchero believes their continued development could eventually lead to something bigger.
Banchero believes the Magic have the foundation to compete for a championship if he and Wagner can fully figure out how to maximize their likeness on the court with both of them being attack-first players. He emphasized that it is more about when they reach that level rather than whether they can get there.
The former No. 1 overall pick also explained how he and Wagner balance their scoring responsibilities. Banchero said he encourages Wagner to remain aggressive whenever he has the ball, believing Orlando is at its best when both stars are attacking and looking to score. This is similar to the system Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown ran in their championship run.
Rather than having a true alpha on the offensive side of the ball, Banchero described their offensive relationship as more of a feel for the game. If one player is having a particularly strong stretch, the offense naturally shifts toward him. Both players understand the importance of staying unselfish and putting the team's success ahead of individual statistics.
Banchero also discussed his mindset after signing his maximum rookie extension, describing the financial security as surreal but insisting that money has never been his primary motivation. Like many great NBA players, it’s about winning.
Banchero said his focus has always been on winning, building a legacy and becoming the best player he can be. With his family taken care of, his attention is now centered on winning an NBA championship, earning MVP honors and leaving a legacy for himself among the league's best players.
His ultimate goal is clear, Banchero wants to lead Orlando to an Eastern Conference championship, bring an NBA title to the city and help elevate the Magic into an elite franchise.
