The Orlando Magic are going to have to wait a little while longer before they can introduce Sean Sweeney as their next head coach.

Sweeney, who is currently serving as the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, is heading to the NBA Finals after the Spurs took down the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. Before that, Spurs guard Devin Vassell and head coach Mitch Johnson gave their thoughts on Sweeney's hiring.

"Definitely happy for him," Vassell said. "The impact that he's had here has been tremendous. I mean, challenging everybody to be better on the defensive end, just holding us to a certain standard. You know, I wish him all the luck.

"But right now, we're focused on him being here right now," Vassell added. "So, I don't even want to give him good luck right now. I want to focus on what we got going on right here."

The Spurs defeated the Thunder in Game 7 on Saturday, 111-103 to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2013-14. They will face the New York Knicks, who they will host for Game 1 on June 3.

If the series were to end in a sweep for either side, there is a chance the Magic could introduce Sweeney in the days following Game 4, which is set for June 10. However, if the series goes seven games, it would not conclude until June 19, which means Magic fans may have to wait until close to the end of the month to hear from Sweeney in his introduction.

"Thrilled for Sean," Johnson told the media. "He deserves it. He's had many opportunities of potentially becoming a head coach, and so it was a matter of when, not if. Even when I reached out to him to speak with him for the first time, happy for Orlando, happy for us he's in the Eastern Conference. 

But thrilled for Sean. I think it's a really good situation," Johnson added. "I know some people over there. I think he'll be a really good fit, and well-deserved and very happy for him."

Sweeney is in his first season as associate head coach with San Antonio after spending the previous four seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. Sweeney has also served as an assistant with Milwaukee Bucks, among other teams, and has played a role in the development of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic and now, Victor Wembanyama.
