New Orlando Magic head coach Sean Sweeney is not messing around when it comes to his job.
It has been over a week since news of the Orlando Magic finalizing a deal to hire San Antonio Spurs top assistant Sean Sweeney spread across the basketball world. Since then, the organization has announced his official hiring.
Sweeney and the Spurs find themselves in a precarious position down 2-0 to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals after losing both games at home. Sweeney will not be formally introduced in a press conference by the Magic until the season has ended, but President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman recently joined the Game On show with Brandon Kravitz and Mike Bianchi to provide an in-depth discussion regarding Sweeney.
Weltman covered multiple topics involving the Magic’s new head coach, including the intensity factor he brings to the organization.
"I'll say this, Sean is a very intense guy, Weltman told Kravitz. "I won't use the word fiery because I think fiery can work for you and against you. But I do think Sean is like really intense and he's very strong willed and he's very focused, and I do believe, nothing new here, that teams generally take on the personality of their coach .So hopefully that gets baked into the everyday work that you do. It gets baked into your off days, your travel days, the personality that you carry with you to show up at the office every day. It starts off the court, it translates on the court, it carries through the whole season.
"And also, look, our fans, they know our players," Weltman added. To have a team, there's no extremes. You can't live in the extremes. You need a little bit of everything. And like, they know that some of the guys that provide that intensity for us were out this year a lot and so, I think we actually have a pretty good balance of the ingredients that it takes to win. Not to say that we don't need to get better.
"And obviously, my guys and I are busy right now and kind of looking at the draft, which is three weeks from now, and everything," he continued. "But yeah, I think that for sure Sean has that intensity and I do think that as he bakes that into the way that we work, it will show up. And like I said, I don’t know if it will be day one — I think it will be day one — but I think it'll grow and grow for a long time."
Sweeney comes to Orlando as a first-time head coach but has been an assistant with various organizations since 2011. He has had a hand in coaching and developing stars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic and Victor Wembanyama. Now, he has a chance to bring the same intensity to Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs.
