Fueled by aggressive ball movement and defensive intensity, Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner sparked a dominant response as Orlando outmuscled Cleveland to showcase their evolving offensive depth.
The Orlando Magic bounced back with a 132-116 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in their first home preseason game. Following a sloppy loss to the Cavaliers earlier in the week, Orlando delivered a strong response.
The win featured a standout performance from the Magic’s dynamic duo of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. Banchero led all scorers with 24 points, while Wagner added 20.
After the game, head coach Sean Sweeney praised the team’s ball movement and aggressiveness, along with its strong shooting from beyond the arc.
Here's what Sweeney had to say post-game following the victory:
On building a major lead over the first three quarters: Sweeney praised the team’s ball movement and offensive aggression, noting that the Magic consistently created options. Defensively, he said the players executed the game plan well and showed improvement in areas emphasized after their previous game.
On Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner scoring the team’s first 17 points: Sweeney praised both Banchero and Wagner for their aggressiveness and ability to create scoring opportunities in different areas of the court.
On Jalen Suggs’ return to the lineup and overall impact: Sweeney praised Suggs’ point-of-attack defense, consistent effort and energy. He also highlighted Suggs decision-making on both ends and his ability to make an immediate impact when entering the game.
On winning the rebounding battle and second-chance points: Sweeney said the Magic emphasized attacking the boards on both ends and matching Cleveland’s physicality when the Cavaliers crashed the glass. He was pleased with Orlando’s execution, particularly its 19 second-chance points.
On Tristan da Silva’s development and role: Sweeney praised da Silva’s aggressiveness from beyond the arc, noting that he has attempted 10 or more 3-pointers in each of the team’s three preseason games. He also highlighted da Silva’s shot selection, defensive positioning, understanding of the schemes and consistent effort. Sweeney wants da Silva to continue to shoot if it is the right play.
On team progress through training camp and preseason: Sweeney acknowledged that the Magic still have room to improve on both ends of the floor as they continue establishing their foundation and adding layers to their system. However, he was pleased with the team’s progress and stressed the importance of continuing to build.
On Tristan da Silva shooting 10-plus 3-pointers per game: Sweeney expressed confidence in da Silva’s shooting ability and work ethic, emphasizing that the forward should remain aggressive and take whatever open shots the game presents. He said the number of attempts matters less than finding quality looks and making the right decisions with the ball.
