Following Jamahl Mosley's dismissal, NBA insider Shams Charania reveals why a high-profile collegiate name is off the table as Orlando prioritizes veteran experience to lead its young core.
The Orlando Magic have officially entered a new era following the dismissal of head coach Jamahl Mosley. Appearing on "The Pat McAfee Show," NBA insider Shams Charania detailed the high expectations surrounding a roster led by Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs. Despite a disappointing first-round exit, Magic President Jeff Weltman, who recently signed a long-term extension, will lead a search focused on finding a veteran leader capable of maximizing a core that has struggled with availability.
Charania noted that while the league expected a change if Orlando failed to advance, the organization has kept its specific targets "buttoned up." According to Charania, the search will likely prioritize candidates with deep postseason experience rather than collegiate prospects.
“This is just the start,” Charania said. “I think of different coaches that are being under evaluation based on playoff outcomes. And this magic team went out and got Desmond Bane last off-season, and they had expectations to contend in the Eastern Conference, and then this year, they lost in the first round. For the third straight year, they were hovering around .500 at different points. Jamahl Mosley had a lot of good that happened. Two division titles. Went to the went to went to the playoffs three consecutive years for the first time since 2011.”
“In Orlando. And listen, he's going to get another shot in the NBA,” Charania added. “He's going to get another look. But this is a team that had accumulated a ton of expectation on this team. Jeff Weltman, the president, who we just saw right there, actually got extended during the season right before the NBA Cup Final Four. So he's going to lead the coaching search for the next head coach of the Orlando Magic, but around Paolo Banchero, Franz, Wagner, Jalen Suggs, and Desmond Bane, this has this team has aspirations to contend. The problem is especially those three guys, Suggs, Banchero, and Wagner, have played about 20% of their games the last two to three years together, and that is going to be an issue, whether it's for Jamahl Mosley or the next head coach.”
McAfee brought up two potential replacement candidates, including Tom Thibodeau and Dusty May, one of whom Charania dismissed as a potential option.
“We're still very early on this,” Charania said. “Anyone that knows anything about Orlando, they're going to keep things, you know, very buttoned up in terms of, this is now the start of the process there. They fired. Jamahl Mosley, there was a point that I heard over the last few weeks that even though a lot of people on the NBA expected this outcome, if the Magic were to lose in the first round, no real names had surfaced, or there was not that back-channel conversation that took place. But now Jeff Weltman and the magic will be going through their search. I mean, listen, there's going to be a ton of names that get thrown around. I particularly don't see Dusty May. I think he has a good thing going at Michigan. I would expect this search to focus on guys with experience at the head coaching position, guys that have had a level of success in the playoffs, taking teams deep. Because that's really if you're trying to compete and contend, that's really what you're looking for.”
