The Orlando Magic kicked off their Emirates NBA Cup schedule with a 121-114 win over the Toronto Raptors, and they got it done thanks to some crucial performances.
Following a 129-99 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, the Orlando Magic returned the favor in a game with bigger implications by beating the Raptors in their home on Friday, 121-114, to kick off their Emirates NBA Cup schedule.
The loss to Toronto on Wednesday dropped the Magic to 1-3 and left more questions than answers. It was going to take a collective team effort and some strong performances for Orlando to win, and those things came to fruition.
Desmond Bane's big night
With Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs missing time with injuries, additional responsibilities following on the rest of the starting lineup were inevitable, and that is especially true for Desmond Bane.
On Wednesday, Bane had a brutal showing as he went 3-for-14 from the field and 2-for-8 from 3-point range. I wrote about how Bane needed to be better, and he was, as he led Orlando with 28 points while hitting six of his 12 3-point attempts.
Bane was brought in to be another legitimate scoring option, and there were plenty of instances last season where he showed that he could lead his team as a scorer. He demonstrated his capabilities again on Friday.
Wagner and Black’s presence
As good as Bane was, he would not have been able to win this game on his own. Franz Wagner and Anthony Black played a critical role in the victory, and they combined for 43 points and 21 of the Magic's 30 assists.
They were scoring and facilitating at a high level, and it was the type of performance that proved that if the Magic can get a cohesive and productive effort from those two players, they will be able to not only survive the absence of Banchero and Suggs, but continue to win important games like this.
Black specifically was incredibly efficient, as he went 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from 3-point range. He also committed only one turnover.
It was the type of performance that supports his case in getting paid, and Orlando needs this version of him now more than ever.
Cain doesn’t miss
For NBA teams to win high-leverage games, whether in the NBA Cup or in the NBA Finals, it takes a strong performance from a role player off the bench to secure a victory.
On Friday, Jamal Cain played the part.
In 15 minutes of playing time, Cain hit all five of his field goal attempts and all three of the shots he attempted from the perimeter to lead the bench unit with 13 points. It was not a perfect performance, as Cain led the team with a -13 rating while also committing four fouls, but he had the hot hand.
In a contest that was decided by seven points, his impact cannot be understated.
Cain showed up in big ways last season as well, and it is the reason why his contract was converted from a two-way deal to a standard one. Orlando will need more efforts like this from him moving forward.
