The Orlando Magic looked strong in their first preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies. That was not the case against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday.
The Orlando Magic fell in their second preseason game to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, 119-105, at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
The Magic did not look as sharp as they did in their preseason-opening win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Let's identify what and who caused them trouble:
"The Beard"
In the preseason, starters are not playing 40 minutes a night, but Cavs guard James Harden did not need that much time to put pressure on the Magic's defense. Harden scored 24 points in 26 minutes by shooting 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point range while knocking down seven of his nine free-throw attempts.
He was Cleveland's leading scorer and consistently delivered buckets when his team needed them. With Harden leading the way, it also opened opportunities for other members of Cleveland's roster to score.
While the Cavs' starting lineup outside of Harden did not convert more than three field goal attempts each, Cleveland also got contributions off its bench when Jaylon Tyson and Mario Hezonja combined for 26 points. Center Thomas Bryant also added 12 points in less than seven minutes of play.
Harden was not distributing the ball like he generally would, as his two assists matched his turnover count, but his presence on the floor drew so much of the Magic's attention that it caused defensive leaks in other areas.
A bad night for Paolo
In Orlando's win over Memphis, forward Paolo Banchero was not particularly efficient, as he only went 2-for-7 from the floor.
But on Sunday evening, he was much worse.
Banchero shot just 1-for-10 for 10 points and had 3 turnovers in 17 minutes of play. Through the two games so far, he is only 3-for-17 and 1-for-5 from 3-point range.
It is only preseason, so there is no reason to overreact, but Banchero is in a clear slump to get things started, and the hope is that with two preseason games remaining (both of which are at home), he can take said games to get into a flow heading into the regular season opener versus the Atlanta Hawks on Oct. 21.
Turnovers hurt
When the Magic played the Grizzlies, they totaled 35 assists in a strong showing of effective ball movement. While they did have 14 turnovers, they only added up to eight points for Memphis.
However, against Cleveland, the Magic had 19 turnovers that the Cavs turned into 15 points. They also only had 23 assists. The ball movement simply wasn't as effective on Sunday, and the Magic paid a price for it.
This is another area in which the preseason provides time for Orlando to clean up mistakes. But overall, a lack of good ball movement also contributed to a poor shooting night in which the Magic went 37-for-91 (40.7%) from the field and 13-for-38 (34.2%) from 3-point range.
On the latest episode of the Full Court Magic Podcast, I questioned what the best versions of the Magic would look like under coach Sean Sweeney, which included elements of their communication and execution. On Sunday, we saw the struggling version of this team, and they have something to learn from before it really begins to count.
