The Orlando Magic were able to pull out a win in the final seconds against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday thanks to some clutch plays.
ORLANDO — The Orlando Magic were able to overcome a four-point deficit with 37 seconds remaining in regulation to capture a thrilling 115-114 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday. Here are the keys to their second win in a row:
Tristan da Silva’s Impact
When the Magic needed a boost, Tristan da Silva was there to provide it.
Da Silva scored 19 points on a perfect shooting night; going 7-7 from the field and 4-4 from 3-point range. Two of those shots came in the final two minutes, as he connected from the perimeter and followed it with a floater to steal the lead back from Dallas as time continued to dwindle.
“I think it's not easy to do, to go from starting to off the bench to back to starting to back off the bench,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “And so, it says something about him as a professional. It says something about his work ethic and the coaches that work with him.
“It's not easy to do. I mean, I know it looks like that because he comes and shoots the heck out of the basketball. But the ability to do that and just play your part, whatever you've been given and tasked to do, he did that. And that's what we need from our guys every night.”
Da Silva has had a lot asked of him in both his rookie and sophomore seasons in the league. Last year, he played in 74 games and made 38 starts as the Magic dealt with a slew of injuries. This season, he has been asked once again to fill the void left by Franz Wagner in the starting lineup as the latter continues to deal with an injured left ankle.
For da Silva, the depth of his experiences have helped him grow and lend to performances like he had on Thursday.
“I mean, you know, obviously last year with Franz and Paolo being out, I feel like I kind of had to experience a lot and grow a lot as a player,” da Silva said. But it's all, you know, it's all for my betterment. It's all the stuff that I take near and dear to my heart.”
Jalen Suggs in the Clutch
While the Magic trailed at multiple points against the Mavericks, no deficit was more dire than the four-point hole they found themselves with the end of regulation staring them in the face.
However, Jalen Suggs would not let it happen.
Suggs hit a 27-foot 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one point. Subsequently, The Magic stopped Cooper Flagg from hitting a midrange jumper, which led to Suggs bringing the ball down the floor as seconds bled off the clock.
Suggs was able to find a cutting Carter for a dunk with 1.4 left on the clock. The Mavericks tried to get the ball in for a game winner but could not pull it off as the Kia Center erupted.
“Oh, yeah, it started with the stop,” Carter said. “We did a really good job, you know, baiting them into a tough a good box out.
“And I knew Gaffer was behind me on the way down the court. So, I thought it would be a good idea to go into a quick drag, put him in no man's land. And then like I just said, he just found me on the road and I finished the play.”
“Everybody wants to win in here,” Suggs said. “Everyone wants to do their job, play great for the next man.”
Understanding the Magnitude of the Moment
The Magic’s victory brings them to 33-28 and seventh in the Eastern Conference. With 21 games remaining and the margin of error thin, the team understands what needs to be done.
“I think for everybody, just staying confident, staying with the process, understanding what time of year it is,” Suggs said. “It's going to be that much more physical. Games are going to be that much more heightened in detail. It's going to matter just a little bit more.”
