After losing Paolo Banchero to an ankle sprain on Friday, the Orlando Magic have now lost Jalen Suggs to a bone bruise in his right knee. With Suggs being added to the list of players on the Magic's roster who are injured, who needs to step up in his place?
The Orlando Magic were dealt another blow to their starting lineup as it was announced by the team on Monday that guard Jalen Suggs is set to miss time with a mild right knee bone bruise that he suffered in the fourth quarter of the Magic's 111-102 win over the New York Knicks on Sunday.
The team's statement also included that Suggs will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
With the fourth quarter winding down to the two-minute mark in Sunday's game, Suggs caught a pass from Anthony Black in transition and attempted a wide-open layup. He immediately grimaced in pain upon leaping toward the rim and fell to the floor, clutching the back of his right knee.
Suggs was eventually helped up and assisted to the locker room.
The loss of Suggs comes one day after news was released that All-Star forward Paolo Banchero was also going to be sidelined with a low-grade high right ankle sprain, an injury that carries a recovery timetable of four to six weeks. For the third season in a row, Orlando's roster has been hit hard by injuries.
The good news is that Suggs' injury was not as serious as it initially seemed, but it is no doubt frustrating for him as he has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career.
Before Suggs was injured, he was struggling on the offensive end of the floor. Over three games, Suggs has averaged eight points while shooting 35.7% from the field and just 11.1% from 3-point range. Even though he was struggling as a scorer, Suggs was averaging two steals per game, and the Magic will no doubt miss his defensive presence.
Because of what Orlando has gone through in terms of injuries in recent years, it is accustomed to dealing with these situations and has a deep understanding of the next-man-up mentality. So, who needs to step up in Suggs' place?
Black's time to shine
If there were ever a time for Black to compel the Magic to give him a new contract, it is right now.
Black had missed part of training camp, all of the preseason, and the first two games of the regular season while he was recovering from an ankle sprain of his own, but he made a strong return to the floor on Sunday and contributed 18 points off the bench on 6-for-11 shooting from the field and 5-for-7 from 3-point range. He was also a team-high +21.
Black is in the process of trying to earn a rookie-scale contract extension, and any chance of receiving the extension this season ceased at the Oct. 19 deadline. President of basketball operations Jeff Weltman expressed his admiration for Black, but detailed the difficulty of Orlando's financial situation as a first apron team.
After coming off a season in which he averaged a career-high 15 points, Black is going to need to prove himself once again, and Suggs' absence paves the way for him to do so.
