The Orlando Magic are in the final stages of locking in the franchise’s 16th head coach, who is set to be San Antonio Spurs associate head coach, Sean Sweeney.

While the nature of the deal has not yet been confirmed by the Magic, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania broke the news of the organization’s process of finalizing the deal with the 41-year-old on Friday. However, the Magic will have to wait a while longer to fully complete the process and introduce Sweeney.

That is because Sweeney and the Spurs are heading to the NBA Finals after defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals on Saturday. Charania's subsequent reporting after releasing the news of Sweeney’s impending hiring by the Magic included that he would remain with the Spurs throughout the remainder of their postseason run, which will go at least four more games as they will face the New York Knicks.

While Magic fans will not get to hear from Sweeney for a while longer, I took to the Full Court Magic Podcast on Friday following the news to discuss what he brings to the team. You can see some of those comments below, and I also provided the link for you to see the full episode:

"Like I said, Sweeney's a rookie head coach. I mean, he served as associate head coach on Mitch Johnson's staff this year at the Spurs and did a great job running that defense, got the Spurs to the third-best defensive rating in the regular season and the second-best in the playoffs, only behind the New York Knicks, who this team might be facing in the NBA Finals, and this is reflective and emblematic of, in a way, what Jamahl Mosley built. It's interesting, the parallels between him and Sweeney; both defensive-minded head coaches first, both came from the Dallas coaching tree. 

Sweeney's first season with the Mavericks as an assistant on Jason Kidd's staff was Jamahl Mosley's first season as the Magic head coach as he left Jason Kidd's staff in Dallas, and Sweeney is inheriting a much better position than Mosley did. I mean, Mosley was inheriting a lottery team without a clear franchise player of the future in a real clear direction.

The Magic are now established because of Mosley's contributions to the team and the culture and are now, you know, a postseason participant. I don't know if I can call this team a contender yet, especially after the year that they had. That feels disingenuous.

But the Magic have become a regular postseason participant making the playoffs in each of the last three years. So Sweeney is inheriting, you know, a pretty solid culture, a good team with a good core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs. And we'll see how he is able to elevate this group because, again, defense is his specialty. As I just mentioned, San Antonio Spurs, second best defensive rating in the playoffs, third best in the regular season. And that was Sweeney's side of the ball. That's how he helped out Mitch Johnson."
