Sacrificing Jalen Suggs for Kyrie Irving could revolutionize Orlando’s stagnant offense. Discover how a blockbuster swap for the veteran playmaker might propel Paolo Banchero toward title contention.
As offseason rumors heat up, the Orlando Magic face pivotal questions regarding their organizational direction, not only in their search for a head coach but also in potential roster shakeups designed to turn the franchise into a true championship contender.
Following a disappointing first-round postseason exit, the front office could choose to move in a completely new direction with its young core by exploring blockbuster trade options. A recent hypothetical trade proposal from Bleacher Report suggested a star-level swap that would send 24-year-old Magic guard Jalen Suggs to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving.
While the trade initially reads as unrealistic, an analytical breakdown reveals how this could align with the shifting timelines of both franchises.
Irving, 34 years old brings championship experience and the true potential to raise the ceiling of Orlando’s offense. Despite concerns about his age and health, when fully available, Irving is still one of the most talented point guards in the league, arguably still boasting the best handles.
Pairing Irving with Banchero and Wagner would admittedly compromise Orlando's perimeter defensive identity. However, if the incoming coaching staff can surround Irving within a strong defensive system while elevating the half-court offense, the substantial scoring upgrade could be worth the team's overall efficiency.
Conversely, sacrificing a 24-year-old foundational asset in Suggs would undeniably degrade the Magic's defensive identity and potentially alter the young core's championship window. Despite enduring multiple lower-leg injuries throughout his tenure in Orlando, Suggs has consistently operated as the roster's competitive backbone. His offensive limitations were magnified, however, during the 2026 postseason, where he struggled to generate clean looks, averaging just 11.1 points while shooting just 24.1 percent from three-point range.
“It would also offer the type of offensive reward the Magic can't otherwise hope to find,” Bleacher Report wrote. “Irving could drum up magic on the ball or buy the likes of Bane, Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner breathing room as a shooting decoy away from it. The fit could be phenomenal and a legitimate itch-scratcher.”
Don Strouble of Roundtable Sports noted whoever becomes the next coach of the Magic needs to maximize the young core, but contrary to Strouble’s thoughts, there is a reality it’s without Suggs.
"Whoever is going to best maximize Paolo Banchero as the face of this franchise, Strouble said. “whoever is going to best maximize Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs in this young core that is poised to take the next step and is desiring to take the next step, that has to be the guy, right? Weltman made the right choice to get Mosley as a culture builder to get the Magic out of purgatory and the depths of the Eastern Conference, to get them out of lottery land, right, and turn them into a playoff team. Now, it's time to take the next step.”
