The Orlando Magic need a new head coach. Is Billy Donovan the right fit?

It has been nearly two weeks since the end of the Orlando Magic's season and the subsequent firing of coach Jamahl Mosley, and the vacancy for the organization's head coaching position remains open.

There has been speculation about who could fill the role for Orlando as its 16th head coach, and one name that has gained traction is Billy Donovan.

Donovan, 60, found success in the collegiate ranks as a coach before making his way to the NBA. He has had tenures with both the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Chicago Bulls, and he could be the type of veteran presence the Magic need to take the next step.

Recently, Don Strouble of Roundtable Sports gave his take on Donovan filling the role on the Full Court Magic podcast.

"Well, most of the off-season chatter and a recurring name that I've heard pop up is Billy Donovan," Strouble said. "And I know you guys have heard it too, and I've seen it too, you've probably engaged in those conversations. And Billy Donovan would be interesting because it would be almost a reunion of sorts, given that he was about to the Magic job in 2007, but backed out at the last minute to return to the University of Florida.

"Since then, he has coached the Oklahoma City Thunder, was really successful with that Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook era of the Thunder," he added. "And then spent the last several seasons with the Chicago Bulls, where they were trapped in Play-In purgatory or worse, and chose to resign after another disappointing season. The Bulls obviously rebuilding their front office, just hired the Magic's assistant GM, Steven Mervis, to help rebuild that front office. And it'll be interesting to see if this is the next step for Billy.

"He's obviously got those Central Florida ties," Strouble continued. "He has veteran experience, even despite all the bad years with the Bulls. Through 882 NBA games, he still has a plus-500 record; 469-413, 19-27 through 46 playoff games.

So I think in terms of veteran experience, the addition of a Billy Donovan would be helpful for the Magic because he just has a level of experience that Jamahl Mosley doesn't, right? He's just been doing it longer and he's done it longer on bigger stages more often, right? Like that's just, it comes with the territory of being a coach that has had success, right?"
