On the latest episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, I react to a report involving Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Magic.
Intro Notes
"I saw this report from Kurt Helin, Lead NBA writer and managing editor at NBCSports.com, NBA on NBC, and he had this to say about the Orlando Magic and incoming head coach, Sean Sweeney, as it relates to Giannis Antetokounmpo. He said, and I quote, 'Orlando is interesting, a team on the rise in the East, but with questions about whether they have a true number one shot creator and bucket getter who can get them a ring. The Magic are expected to let new coach Sean Sweeney try to figure out the Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner puzzle rather than blow it up for Antetokounmpo or anyone else, League sources told NBC Sports. However, if they decide to get in the mix, they can put together an impressive offer.'
So, this is interesting, right? I talked last week, and if you guys tuned into the episode last week where my friend and colleague Andrew Cherico, who also contributes to this Orlando Magic Roundtable site, jumped on the pod with me and discussed how Giannis trade could materialize, if there's any merit to it, you know, and we both kind of came to the conclusion that, you know, you hear the old saying, where there's smoke, there's fire. I don't think that this is anything more than, at best, a small, candlelit flame.
I don't think that this is a group right now, first of all, that is in a position to acquire Giannis reasonably, or one that really has a great deal of interest in it, especially when you have President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman at the helm. And Weltman, for all my Magic fans that know, this is someone who's been, he has been in control, in his role of this franchise for nearly a decade now. He e got this job in 2017.
I just don't see Jeff Weltman playing into this. I don't see him being interested. This is someone who has ad nauseam, proverbially pounding the table, talking about how injuries have affected this group, and how he believes in his heart of hearts—this is my analysis of him, this isn't a quote from him, by the way, I want to make that clear—in his heart of hearts, that the Magic would have progressed further in the playoffs and finally punched through the ceiling that is the first round of the playoffs had they been healthy."
