On the latest episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, I question how difficult the Southeast Division will be for the Orlando Magic.
On Friday, the Orlando Magic will play their final preseason game, in which they will host the Miami Heat before embarking on the 2026-27 regular season.
The game against Miami will serve as not just a preview of what's to come between in-state rivals, but a look at the challenges the Southeast Division will provide for the Magic.
From a personnel standpoint, the Heat, the Washington Wizards, and the Atlanta Hawks each had more significant offseasons than Orlando did. The division is shaping up to have its most difficult landscape in years, as each team has a playoff-capable roster. On the latest episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, I discussed how this affects the Magic:
"The Magic will host the Hawks for opening night on Oct. 21. In terms of the Heat, again, just massive, massive moves, stuff that the Magic couldn't even dream of making, especially in a Jeff Weltman-led front office. The Desmond Bane move was by far the biggest one he has made since he has been leading this front office for a decade now. And I don't know if he's going to do anything bigger than that, at least in the immediate future.
And that's kind of where I worry about the Magic: you know, with all these seismic moves happening within their own division, is running it back going to work? Now, I do believe in Paolo and Franz as a duo. I think I believe in the Desmond Bane, Jalen Suggs backcourt, though I have my grievances with Jalen's offense, and neither one of them is a true floor general, but both are very skilled in their own right, and their strengths are very strong.
But I look around, and I'm like, what if Washington stays healthy? What if the Wizards get off to a hot start and they believe that with this mix of vets, you know, between A.D. and Trae Young, and then you've got the young guys, Alex Sarr, now the rookie AJ Dybantsa. Like, what if they just go off, you know, and they really believe in themselves?
You know, what if Charlotte finds a way? Even though they lost, you know, that maybe bona fide number one that we talk about in LaMelo Ball — he's very flawed number one. And I really do believe that, like, Brandon Miller, Kon Knueppel could make this their team. And I mean, Naz Reid is no slouch; that's a perennial sixth man right there. You know, so that was a great pickup. I just don't know with the Magic.
I think that this could get really difficult quickly. And it's also part of the reason why I think they have to stay healthy this season, because one bad injury, and these are the teams that you're facing the most within your divisional structure. They could get buried in that thing quickly."
