The way Sean Sweeney implements his approach as the new head coach of the Orlando Magic has a chance to be very beneficial.

The Orlando Magic will be entering the 2026-27 season under new leadership after the organization hired Sean Sweeney to be its next head coach.

Sweeney will be taking the reins after Jamahl Mosley was relieved of his duties following Orlando’s first-round playoff loss to the Detroit Pistons in early May, and it will be largely up to him to get this young roster to take the next step.

For Sweeney, there are many elements that go into being a successful team, and he plans on implementing those elements from day one with the Magic. In a recent episode of Full Court Magic, I detailed them and talked about why they are especially important for the core group of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs.

"[He] went on to talk about preparation, attentiveness, active attention, you know, and that's something that I think a young group like this magic team needs, right? Like this core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs.

We're talking about four guys that are not yet in or have just now reached their prime, right? This is a very young nucleus and a group that is largely unproven. They've shown that they have what it takes to make it to the postseason, right? And twice in the last three years, this group, with the exception of Desmond Bane — obviously last season was his first one with the team — but, you know, twice in the last three years, for the most part, this group has gone to two Game 7’s in the first round, but just did not have the experience or the veteran presence, right, to take that next step. And these experiences matter, right?"

The culture Mosley instilled was able to help lift the Magic from being a lottery-bound team to a regular postseason participant, but his limitations as a coach became glaring, and while no player on the roster will say it outright, his voice was no longer getting through to his team.

Now, Sweeney is entering the picture with intentionality and a fresh approach, and that should be beneficial for the Magic. We have already seen newfound motivation this offseason from Paolo Banchero, who recently told Stephen A. Smith that he is working harder this summer than ever before.

For Orlando to reach the next level, buying into the messages Sweeney will convey is crucial. So far, things are on the right track, and while the Magic will undoubtedly face obstacles and adversity under their new rookie head coach, the belief will be new and strong.
