Bleacher Report’s latest rankings spark heated debate over the Magic cornerstone's efficiency, questioning if his high-usage scoring masks underlying flaws as Orlando chases a deep postseason run.
Entering what is now his fifth season, the Orlando Magic's franchise-changing moment came when they landed the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft and selected star forward Paolo Banchero. That selection ushered in a new era of Magic basketball, with hopes of building a championship contender around their young cornerstone.
Fast forward four years, and Orlando has yet to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs. With those expectations surrounding the franchise, a question has begun to emerge: Is Paolo Banchero overrated?
Bleacher Report recently listed Banchero as the third-most overrated player in the NBA, with only Brandon Ingram and Anthony Davis ranking ahead of him on the list.
While Banchero has not yet elevated the Magic to the championship level many envisioned, and he experienced a statistical dip last season, his impact on the franchise remains undeniable. He has led Orlando to three consecutive postseason appearances and established himself as one of the most prolific scorers in Magic history.
Bleacher Report recently questioned whether Paolo Banchero has lived up to the expectations that came with being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, ranking him as the third-most overrated player in the league.
The outlet acknowledged Banchero’s impressive physical profile and potential as a 6-foot-10, 250-pound primary option but argued his production has not consistently matched the level of hype surrounding him. Bleacher Report pointed to concerns surrounding his efficiency, shot selection and overall impact as areas where he still needs to improve.
One of the biggest criticisms was Banchero’s reliance on mid-range scoring and his lack of efficiency compared to other high-usage players. Despite carrying a large offensive workload, the outlet noted that his effective field-goal percentage ranks near the bottom among players with similar usage rates since he entered the league.
Bleacher Report also highlighted areas where Banchero can continue to grow, including improving his assist-to-turnover ratio, becoming a more efficient shooter and creating more defensive impact. With the Magic investing heavily in him as their franchise cornerstone, the expectation is for Banchero to consistently prove he can be the type of player who elevates Orlando into true championship contention.
Whether or not they believe Banchero is overrated, he has another opportunity to prove them wrong this season.
