While the front office prioritized roster continuity, passing on versatile veteran Bruce Brown Jr. leaves a critical void in perimeter shooting and defensive depth for Sean Sweeney.
It's understandable why the Orlando Magic brought Isaac back on an extremely team-friendly contract, but adding another 3-and-D wing should have been a primary objective. The Magic still need to improve their perimeter shooting and continue taking steps forward offensively under new head coach Sean Sweeney.
Bleacher Report noted Bruce Brown Jr. may no longer be the high-level defender or Sixth Man of the Year candidate he once was, but he remains a useful veteran who can fill different roles for a team.
His 38.5 percent shooting from three last season is difficult to fully trust given his career 34.4 percent mark from deep and the fact that he has only shot above 35 percent three times in a full season. Still, last season showed the potential value Brown can provide when he gets open looks from the perimeter.
The rest of Brown’s game remains reliable. He keeps the ball moving, can attack the basket with or without the ball, understands how to cut and relocate in the half court, and can create opportunities out of the short roll.
One remaining free agent who would’ve made sense for Orlando is veteran wing Bruce Brown. He would give the Magic another reliable perimeter option while reinforcing the defensive identity Sweeney wants to establish. Beyond his on-court versatility, Brown's durability would also be a major asset. He played all 82 games for the Denver Nuggets last season, and pairing another ironman with Desmond Bane, who also appeared in all 82 games, would provide valuable stability throughout the regular season while strengthening Orlando's depth on the wing.
Now coach Sweeney must win with the core he has.

But you know, we're in this situation now where all of the stuff that we've been talking about throughout the offseason is going to be put into effect and it's going to materialize," Strouble said in a recent Full Court Magic episode. "We're going to hear from players more extensively here at the end of the month during media day and then we got the training camp and then preseason, right? And so, we're going to see Sean Sweeney's coaching as a head coach in full effect. We're going to see how the young guys, especially during the preseason, have gotten better over the summer. We're going to see a lot of different things from this group that is ready to take the next step, right? I've kind of talked about that ad nauseam on this show: this group is ready for more. That's the reason why the organization pivoted to hiring Sean Sweeney after dismissing Jamahl Mosley is that they felt that he was the right guy to lead this team from the sidelines."
"And now it is all going to be put into practice," Strouble added. "I talked about with my colleague Andrew Cherico in a recent episode—and I believe it was his quote, in his words—is that it's a put up or shut up kind of year for this group, right? And so now we get to see what a young Magic team with more players closer to their primes... I mean Franz Wagner just turned 25 years old before the end of August. And so players that are closer to their primes, that have more experience and have been more battle-tested trying to take the next step in an Eastern Conference landscape that has only become more difficult given the flurry of offseason movement that occurred over the summer. And so it's going to be an exciting time. And I think that there is a lot of things to pay attention to here."
