The Orlando Magic's defensive identity used to fuel the team, but after falling off last season, it is up to Sean Sweeney to get them back on track.
Heading into his first season with the Orlando Magic, coach Sean Sweeney will not have the same burden of lifting a tanking franchise as other first-time head coaches have, but his responsibilities and expectations are vast.
Yet when it comes to helping the Magic recapture their defensive identity, Sweeney has an advantage.
During his time with the San Antonio Spurs last season, Sweeney led the defense and helped it post the third-best defensive rating in the NBA. He also oversaw the continued development of Victor Wembanyama en route to his first Defensive Player of the Year Award.
In recent campaigns under former coach Jamahl Mosley, Orlando’s defense flourished. But last season, it experienced a precipitous decline, falling to 13th in defensive rating after ranking second in 2024-25.
The Magic were far from the best version of themselves, and now Sweeney has a chance to turn things around with his defensive acumen. In the latest episode of the Full Court Magic Podcast, I touched on how Sweeney can return this defense to its dominant form while elevating the offense:
"So, you know, what can this team do in its offseason preparation to be ready to go, and what is Sean Sweeney scheming up? Because he is a coach that — we know how good he is as a defensive mind, and how he was able to help elevate the San Antonio Spurs' defense with Victor Wembanyama as the head of the snake, right? And the goal is to get the Magic back to how dominant they were defensively because they fell off badly last year.
They fell out of the top 10 in defensive rating when they were top three, you know, the year before. And so, how can he help revitalize the defense while also integrating a new kind of, like, offensive philosophy in a way that's beneficial for the group and plays to the strengths of everyone who's touching the floor, because he wants to get everyone who's touching the floor involved? And so, that's going to take some work, right, to get everyone integrated in a way where, when the ball is in your hands, you become the point guard.
I believe those were his words at some point; you know, he was talking about spacing and how important that is. And, you know, he wants to implement discipline and things of that nature, and the Magic are going to need all the best parts of Sean Sweeney to be successful this season because it's not going to be an easy year, right? But they're made of the right stuff; he's made of the right stuff, and it'll be interesting to see what happens."
