The Orlando Magic have their next head coach, but other moves need to be made.

The Orlando Magic head into the offseason having already made a major move in hiring San Antonio Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney to be the next head coach of the franchise.

However, that will not be the last of the moves President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman and the front office will need to make if they want to improve the team further. The roster certainly does not need a full makeover, but there are deficiencies within it that are costing much more money than the value provided in return.

On a recent episode of the Full Court Magic Podcast, my colleague Andrew Cherico and I discussed what the Magic should do in terms of making personnel changes and saving money, and it starts with moving on from Jonathan Isaac.

"At this point, this has been an albatross contract," I said. "Even when Isaac's healthy, he is just not an impact player on the floor... You are talking about a consistently injured player that again it just is not giving you the worth of this contract.

There was one point last year... where they had, I believe it was 22 million tied up in Jonathan Isaac and Tyus Jones to average a combined four points per game. That is a money pit and it's not the makings of the kind of bench players that you would want going into a playoff series."

Instead of spending more money on Isaac, who is due $14.5 million if he remains on the roster next season, the Magic need to find a way to upgrade to another 3-and-D wing defender who is more serviceable.

"On defense, he slowed down some since putting on some weight," Cherico said about Isaac. "We know that they wanted him to bolster up to be a primary front-court defender between power forward and center. I don't think that's really paid off... I think the Jonathan Isaac experiment is over.

I do think the Magic could use some of that low salary cap extension money, mid-tier level money to sign some potential impact players in free agency, too... continue to get more guard scoring and perimeter depth. Tim Hardaway Jr. maybe, or maybe even Gary Trent... serviceable bigger guards slash smaller power forwards that could be good wing defenders and maybe 3-and-D guys for this team."

Given the constraints on their spending, the Magic will need to facilitate well on the margins this season to bring in players to improve the bench while keeping the right players in the building.
