The Orlando Magic will get their first dose of game action on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, and it will be a preview for how they will look under coach Sean Sweeney.
On Wednesday, the Orlando Magic will open the preseason on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies.
This will be a chance for new head coach Sean Sweeney to experiment with different lineups and see how a week's worth of training camp translates to a game setting. The Magic have been working hard to ramp up to game shape while ensuring their game plan execution is effective.
This is an important year for Orlando as its young core tries to take another step under a new head coach. The team is clearly bought into Sweeney's philosophy, and now it is time to deliver against the competition.
In the latest episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, I questioned what the best version of this team will look like under Sweeney. Below is some of what I had to say:
"Will we see the best version of the Orlando Magic under Sean Sweeney? And when I say that, will we see the best parts of this team play consistently under him? I want to say yes, given that the one thing I was hoping for ahead of media day was that the buy-in was going to remain strong because it already seemed that way, and now that we're getting some more tangible evidence through these practices.
I can confirm, being in the building often, that this group is bought in; they're ready to go, and they are doing the extra work it takes, but now can that translate, and can this group truly be its best self and when I think about the best versions of the Magic I think about the fact that they have the benefit of two 6-foot-10 forwards that can put the ball on the floor and create their own shot and one of them is elite from a two-way perspective in Franz Wagner.
Will Paolo and Franz coexist in a way that truly makes them a star duo worth being feared? And so much of that again comes down to whether they are healthy enough to stay on the floor together, but if they are, will they complement and elevate each other's games further under Sweeney's approach and his guidance than what they were able to do in years past?
What will the backcourt look like will Jalen Suggs continues to be a strong defensive player while also elevating his offensive game and becoming a better version of the point guard that the Magic need him to be? Will he improve in big moments, especially because he crumbled in last year's playoff series?"
