The future of the Orlando Magic and Jeff Weltman's position in the organization might be hanging on Sean Sweeney's performance.
Orlando Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman has been in his post since 2017, overseeing various organizational decisions.
From drafting players to coaching changes, Weltman has done it all, but is he at a critical point in his tenure? That might be the case.
There are executives in the NBA who have had longer stays with a franchise than Weltman has, but there are also ones who have not enjoyed the same kind of runway he has. In recent years, the Magic have made strides, but now it is time for them to become better and take the next step, and that puts even more pressure on their decision to hire Sean Sweeney as the franchise’s next head coach.
For Weltman and the front office surrounding him, the determination behind making Sweeney the next head coach cannot be overlooked. While Sweeney was working as an assistant on Mitch Johnson’s staff with the San Antonio Spurs and aiding them to the NBA Finals last season, Orlando was in contact with him.
Interviews and conversations were had in the little time Sweeney could afford to offer, but both parties found a way to make it work, and he landed the job. Hiring Sweeney was like threading a needle, and Weltman found the meticulous process to be worth it.
Now, it has to work out.
Sweeney is a young, first-time head coach. The good news is that he has a lot of valuable experience from his time as an assistant, and he has a knack for connecting with players. However, he is a rookie in his own right, and there will be some bumps in the road.
For the second time in a row, Weltman is taking a chance on a rookie head coach. He did the same with Jamahl Mosley, and in a way, it worked out. Mosley’s defensive-first approach and culture he instilled helped the Magic become playoff participants, but he reached his ceiling.
Now, it is on Sweeney to get past that ceiling and demonstrate that Weltman made the right choice. The latter spoke at Sweeney’s introductory press conference about how much homework was done in identifying and choosing him as the man for the job; now it has to come together.
The DeVos family put their trust in Weltman when they quietly extended him last season, but this coaching hire cannot go wrong. The Magic cannot afford to regress under Weltman’s supervision, and the organization cannot keep him if things begin to go in the wrong direction.
The hiring of Sweeney was a significant move for Weltman, and only time will tell if he and his staff made the right choice.
