The Orlando Magic have a lot to prove, but they have put together the type of team and coaching staff capable of reaching their goals.
The back half of November is in full swing, which means that it is almost time for the 2026-27 NBA season. For fans of the Orlando Magic, it is almost time to see if their team can take that elusive next step.
The Magic have become a winning team in recent seasons, but the ceiling has remained the first round of the playoffs. The incoming version of the team, which is largely the same except for a new head coach and some minor tweaks, is trying to crack that ceiling.
For Orlando, there is both reason for optimism and concern. Recently, I talked about my biggest point of confidence for the Magic with my colleague RJ Saunders of 1010XL Magic. Here is what I had to say:
"My biggest level of confidence is the buy-in that this group is going to have into their new coach, Sean Sweeney. We've seen it demonstrated in the offseason: the way Paolo Banchero is working, the way some of these other guys are working. It seems like a weight is kind of lifted off their shoulders, despite everything that transpired in the playoffs.
It feels like they can start fresh. And that's no disrespect to Coach Mosley. I mean, I love speaking to Coach Mosley. He's one of the friendliest humans ever, and I wish him all the luck in New Orleans. But it's time for a change, and I think that this group will benefit from it. And I think that Sean Sweeney, despite not being a head coach, has enough experience as an assistant, especially in high-level moments, to raise this group's ceiling, and I think that they're buying into that. So, that's my biggest point of confidence."
Sweeney will bring a new and much-needed voice to Orlando’s locker room. Jamahl Mosley did well in elevating the organization out of lottery-team territory with his defense-first mindset and his intangible culture-building tactics, but his ceiling as a coach was made clear, especially last season.
As a rookie head coach, Sweeney will have a lot to prove, but the work began for him before he ever stepped in the building, and the kind of conversations he has had with the team’s best players, such as Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs have already begun to instill confidence in them.
That is important because a team needs its best players and top leaders bought in before the rest of the group can do the same. Sweeney is going to lean on those players, just as they will lean on him.
The level of experience Sweeney is bringing is also something Mosley did not have when he joined the Magic organization as a first-time head coach. In two of the last three seasons, Sweeney has been an assistant on a staff that reached the NBA Finals. He knows what it takes to reach the mountaintop, and he will have a plan for this organization to reach its goals.
