The future of who will lead the Orlando Magic after the organization chose to fire coach Jamahl Mosley still remains uncertain, and the names of additional candidates have entered the fold since then.

A space that was once singularly occupied by Billy Donovan's candidacy has branched out to include names like Jeff Van Gundy, Sean Sweeney and, more recently, Jason Kidd.

Recently, I went on the Full Court Magic Podcast to discuss some of the newer names that have entered the fold as potential suitors for the job, and I spoke specifically about what hiring Sweeney or Kidd would mean for the Magic if they decide to venture down either path, as well as why being patient in this process could be beneficial for the front office.

"It would be Sweeney's first head coaching gig, but he has over a decade of experience as a coach in the NBA as an assistant at various places. And, you know, he's been upgraded. He's the associate head coach of the Spurs.

"And obviously, we see what the Spurs are doing right now. They're two wins away from knocking off the defending champion, Oklahoma City Thunder, and punching their own ticket to the NBA finals for the first time since 2013-14. You know, so that's on the table."

Since airing the new episode of Full Court Magic, the Spurs have lost Game 5 to the Thunder and find themselves on the brink of elimination, which could make Sweeney available sooner than later if San Antonio falls in Game 6 on Thursday. Kidd was also recently fired by the Dallas Mavericks as the franchise shifts in a new direction under team President, Masai Ujiri.

"It's going to be really interesting to see which direction the Magic want to go," I added. "Do they want to go for Jason Kidd, who made his way as a point guard, you know, one of the great point guards of all time and, you know, did so much as a player and not as much as a coach, but still successful as a coach? Could he be the one to unlock this roster?

The number of candidates coming available since Mosley’s firing is also why I believe, for all of Jeff Weltman’s flaws, his patience may serve him well here.

"I believe that this is partially why Weltman has not done anything yet. And this is not a defense of him. I'm not… I don't know if it's the right or the wrong move to have not hired a coach yet. I'm leaning towards it's the right move because you don't want to jump the gun too quickly and then miss out on a candidate that could have been better. 

"Because, say they hire Billy Donovan before they interviewed Jeff Van Gundy or Sean Sweeney, or even saw that Jason Kidd was getting fired, right? Like, that could have been a little too hasty. That could have been jumping the gun and, you know, putting all your eggs in one basket, so to speak."
