The Orlando Magic should benefit from Sean Sweeney's mindset.
While there may be questions about the type of success Sean Sweeney will accomplish with the Orlando Magic as a first-time head coach, what cannot be questioned is his tenacity, drive and gratitude for the opportunity at hand.
Sweeney was very honest about what the position meant to him in his opening comments of his introductory press conference on June 18, and he continued to talk about what he aims to achieve and what it will take for the Magic to be successful under his leadership. In a recent episode of Full Court Magic, I discussed Sweeney’s demeanor and comments:
"I was in the building at the Advent Health Training Center listening to Coach Sweeney talk as I was getting video and photo, and, you know, this is a coach that is very intentional and seems very driven, and, you know, a lot of times, like, you see people in press conferences, and that's really, like, not even just the media but the fan base.
Like, that's your first impression of a new coach unless, you know, I'm sure some of my colleagues, you know, talked some one-on-one with him, you know, like, maybe got to see more and hear more than what he offered in those 30-plus minutes at the podium with President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman, but by and large, that's your first impression, and, you know, we've seen good press conferences. We've seen bad ones. This was a great one.
Sweeney was very detailed in his approach to addressing us and the larger fan base out there and talking about his goals for this group, you know, obviously very thankful to the people who helped get him here from the coaches he's worked under to his family. You know, those who have inspired him, and, you know, he just seems like he's going to take a very honest approach to this job in this role, and that's something that he brought up nearly first and foremost after, you know, thanking everyone initially, and, you know, this is a long time coming for him.
You know, he's been in various assistant roles since breaking in with the then New Jersey Nets way back in 2011 as video coordinator, and has just worked his way up to this point in his career, you know, and one of the first things he said was, 'Our team is going to be built on our values. We're going to value character, we're going to value competition, we're going to value connection, and we are going to value the game.’"
Sweeney’s comments are important because it demonstrates the hunger and vision he has in his role. At just 42 years old, Sweeney can also align well with the Magic’s young core, and his resume of elevating other young stars in other organizations will also help.
Overall, Sweeney has a clear plan for the team, and much of it is built on intangibles, which are essential to helping this group take the next step.
