Franz Wagner and the Orlando Magic are looking to bounce back from injuries and an underwhelming season.

The Orlando Magic are entering a crucial season for this version of the team, and they will have to prove themselves to inspire confidence for the future.

With incoming head coach Sean Sweeney, the goal is for him to elevate the roster, especially the team’s best players: Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs.

For Wagner especially, this is a year where the primary focus is arguably keeping him healthy. Last season, after dealing with a high ankle sprain in December that produced nagging effects for months, Wagner only totaled 34 games in the regular season, and his playoff run ended in Game 4 of the first round against the Detroit Pistons when he suffered a calf strain.

Wagner just turned 25 years old on Aug. 27, so all of his prime years are still ahead of him, and the Magic will need the most impactful version of him to reach their potential. In the latest episode of the Full Court Magic Podcast, I detailed how important this offseason is for Wagner and the team in general:

"This group is ready for more. That's the reason why the organization pivoted to hiring Sean Sweeney after dismissing Jamahl Mosley: they felt that he was the right guy to lead this team from the sidelines, and now it is all going to be put into practice. And as I talked about with my colleague Andrew Cherico in a recent episode, and I believe it was his quote, in his words, is that it's a put-up-or-shut-up kind of year for this group, right? And so now we get to see what a young Magic team looks like with more players closer to their primes.

I mean, Franz Wagner just turned 25 years old before the end of August. And so, these are players who are closer to their primes that have more experience, and have been more battle-tested trying to take the next step in an Eastern Conference landscape that has only become more difficult given the flurry of off-season movement that occurred over the summer. And so it's going to be an exciting time, and I think that there are a lot of things to pay attention to here.

Some of these things I've talked about, some others I've written about, and I want to circle back to a couple things and touch on others. One of them being how beneficial it can be for Franz Wagner to have a full summer of recovery. Obviously, we've seen Tristan da Silva playing for Germany over the summer; Franz has not been a part of this campaign. He had a brutal 2025-26 season, as we all know. Suffering that high ankle sprain on Dec. 7 against the New York Knicks; was never quite right after that.

[He] did come back for the playoffs, only to have it cut short by a calf strain that he suffered in Game 4, and then the subsequent collapse by the Magic without his presence out on the basketball court. And so, I think it's really important that he said, you know what? I need to take this summer. I need to recover and get my body right so I can be there for my team through an 82-game NBA season because it is a grueling season, and this is a team that is no stranger to injuries.

And so, having Wagner commit to his rehab and to his health over the summer and putting that above, I'm sure, what was a great desire to play for Germany and to represent his native country is, you know, a selfless act by the young man, and it shows that he is taking the Magic's future seriously, and his future seriously as a key component of this roster. And it will be intriguing to see how it plays out and how it benefits him. You know, we'll see how explosive he looks early in the season."
