The 2025-26 season was not easy for Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner. Can he have better fortunes in the upcoming one?

The 2025-26 NBA season was anything but easy for Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner as it pertained to his health.

Wagner's season was decimated by a nagging high ankle sprain that he suffered against the New York Knicks on Dec. 7 against the New York Knicks, and because of persistent issues with it, he played in only 34 regular-season games, which was a career-low mark.

It seemed as if Wagner had gotten healthy at the right time when he provided a big momentum boost on both ends of the floor for the Magic in a blowout win over the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA Play-In Tournament before helping Orlando to a 3-1 lead over the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs.

However, Wagner suffered a calf strain in Game 4 that ended the series for him prematurely, and the Magic squandered their lead and ultimately got sent home.

None of it was easy for Wagner. Time after time, when he was able to play to his potential and help his team, it was snatched away from him. Now, all he can do is look forward to the upcoming season.

One thing for Wagner to get excited about is the arrival of new head coach Sean Sweeeney, who was officially named to his position by the Magic on June 1. For Wagner, this will be the first time he has played under a new head coach in his NBA career.

Two weeks after Sweeney got the job, Wagner spoke to HoopsHype about Sweeney’s character and eagerness to coach the team, which rubbed off on Wagner.

That type of demeanor is going to be important for Wagner moving forward. He addressed how difficult it was to continuously try and return from the same injury, only to have it set him back more than once, but his desire to rise past the challenges he has faced take priority.

Wagner knows the pain of losing in the first round continuously. In each of the last three seasons, the Magic have not been able to get past that point, and the organization has not won a playoff series since 2010.

To reach that next level, Wagner is going to have to be the best version of himself. He has proven that on both sides of the ball, he has what it takes to be a high-leverage winning player.

A full offseason to get his body right is important, too. For the first time in a while, Wagner is not playing for Germany, his native country, over the summer.

What he has been doing and what he continues to do until training camp begins will be beneficial to him and the Magic, and they need the best version of him to reach their goals.
