The Orlando Magic's signing of Nikola Vucevic is more than just a roster addition.
While many teams in the Eastern Conference have completed one or more significant moves this offseason, the Orlando Magic were heavily restricted in their pursuit of players to add because of first-apron restrictions.
However, there is one difference-making acquisition they achieved: Reuniting with center Nikola Vucevic.
The question is, how much of a difference can it make?
Bench upgrade
Without question, one of the Magic’s most pressing needs was an addition to their bench unit. Last season, Orlando’s bench struggled to produce, and it cost games in one way or another.
Vucevic alleviates that, and with the departure of Moritz Wagner to the Brooklyn Nets, the acquisition of Vucevic becomes much more important. This is because the Magic need someone behind Wendell Carter Jr. who can make an impact in the front court.
Goga Bitadze has had his moments, but his flaws can become a hindrance. Vucevic, however, is a proven veteran who is still productive at 35 years old.
Last season, Vucevic split time with the Chicago Bulls and the Boston Celtics after he was traded to the latter. Through 64 appearances, Vucevic made 49 starts and averaged 15.1 points and 8.4 rebounds.
Put him on last year’s Magic team, and you have the most productive player in the reserve unit. Moreover, his numbers were also better than Carter’s.
Fan recognition
During many of the Magic’s toughest seasons, Vucevic was a bright spot.
After he was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2011 NBA Draft, Vucevic was traded to the Orlando Magic in the four-team blockbuster that sent Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers in August 2012.
From 2012-2021, Vucevic was the most productive player for Orlando as it made the playoffs twice in that span and secured a winning record only once. For the fans, he was someone to root for, and that love was reciprocated.
Vucevic made Orlando his home, and he has maintained a house in the area since. Upon his signing with the team, he made his love for the organization and the city known, and that is something the fans can gravitate toward.
Overall, this was possibly the best move the Magic could have made. For the veteran minimum, Vucevic checks multiple boxes without sinking the organization deeper into troublesome apron territory. For the fans and Vucevic, there is a heartfelt reunion that is taking place near the twilight of his career, and that is invaluable.
