Dallas Mavs’ Jason Kidd on Luka Doncic’s 49-Point Heroics: ‘He’s Special’ cover image

Luka Doncic saved the day in the Dallas Mavericks’ 125-120 victory against the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night.

The Dallas Mavericks won their second straight game to open the 2023-24 season with a 125-120 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night.

For most of the game, Dallas found themselves a few points behind, but as he’s done time and time again, it was Luka Doncic that saved the day for the Mavs with his 49-point performance and late game heroics.

With the game tied at 120 with less than 30 seconds remaining, Doncic threw up a one-handed, 25-foot heave that banked in to put the Mavs up by three, ultimately leading to the win.

“I'm just glad I didn't call a timeout when I wanted to. We probably wouldn't be sitting here,” Mavs coach Jason Kidd said. “That's a Luka special. He likes the ball late, he loves those situations and he finds a way.”

“The thing about Luka, he practices a lot of crazy shots,” Kidd said. “Sometimes they get caught on camera. Sometimes it's just the human eye that catches them. Tonight was one of those shots.”

That’s what’s truly special about No. 77 — these crazy shots that he makes, whether they’re full-court heaves or clutch time shots, he puts in the work in preparation to hit them when the opportunity presents itself.

“He put us in a position to get there. 49 points. He played well,” Kidd said. “What else can you say about it? I don't know what to say. He's special.”

Special indeed, coach.
