The No. 1 overall pick took home Rookie of the Year honors over former Duke teammate and Charlotte Hornets sharpshooter Kon Knueppel.
Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg has officially been named the 2026 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, outlasting a strong head-to-head push by Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel, who finished in second.
Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick from Duke and former college teammate of Knueppel's, ended the season leading Knueppel in each of the major statistical per-game averages.
Though Knueppel's efficiency had the advantage and Charlotte's dramatics turnaround this season was notable, the Mavs teenager put together a historic campaign that ends with hardware.
Flagg outlasted Knueppel by 26 points after 100 media members that voted. That margin of victory is the second smallest between the top two finishers of the award since the NBA adopted this format in 2002-03. The only finish tighter was Scottie Barnes beating Evan Mobley in 2021-22 by 15 voting points.
Flagg averaged 21 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists and was near the top of rookie standings in total numbers across these main categories for the year.
He shouldered otherworldly expectations as the new face of the Mavericks organization from Day 1, and during another tumultuous season that included a GM firing and major trade deadline shakeup, Flagg maintained his excellence.
The Newport, Maine native joined Michael Jordan as the only two players in NBA history to lead their team in points, rebounds, assists and steals in their first season.
His scoring onslaughts on the back half of the season set a new benchmark for what a rookie is capable of. With a career high of 51 points on April 3, Flagg became the first rookie ever to reach the half-century scoring mark. He added nights of 49, 45, and 42 points in a game, as well.
Only Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had more 45-point nights in the league this season.
Though the Mavs' losing took a toll on the 19-year-old, members of the organization knew who deserved to be crowned as the best rookie in the league.
"Hard to appreciate greatness while going thru hard times but that boy is 1 of none," Naji Marshall said of Flagg on social media following Cooper's back-to-back 40-point games, becoming the first rookie to accomplish that since Allen Iverson.
"I think everybody knows he’s going to be Rookie of the Year," Mavs guard Brandon Williams said earlier this month. "It’s a no-brainer."
As the hype grew toward Flagg's candidacy despite consistent competition from Knueppel, the Mavs star remained poised.
"I’ve said this a bunch, it is what it is. For me, like I’ve said before it’s about getting better every single day. I know what I’m capable of and what I can do. So for me it’s always been about just improving every night, going out there and competing and being the player that I know I can be and I’ll let all the rest of that stuff figure it out."
And now it's settled, Cooper Flagg is the 2026 NBA Rookie of the Year.
