The Dallas Mavericks waived veteran guard Tyus Jones in order to convert Ryan Nembhard's two-way rookie contract to a standard NBA one. The team also got news that Khris Middleton has elected to stick it out in Dallas for the remainder of this season instead of be bought out and join a contender.
With a roster spot still available, Dallas has now filled its third two-way contract spot with one of the best shooters in the G-League, John Poulakidas, as reported by insider Jake Fischer.
The lefty guard has appeared in 24 G-League games this season and now joins the two-way duo of center Moussa Cisse and wing Miles Kelly.
Poulakidas has averaged 14.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists with the San Diego Clippers this season. He's shot a blistering 47.3 percent from 3-point range in over 30 minutes per game.
He comes to the professional ranks by way of prestigious Yale University. Last season as a fourth-year senior, he was a First Team All-Ivy League selection after shooting over 40 percent from downtown. Poulakidas earned Ivy Tournament MVP honors and was one of just 45 college players invited to last year's NBA G-League Elite Camp.
Nembhard and Cisse have seen a good chunk of minutes at the NBA level due to the Mavs' slew of injuries, and Poulakidas could see sparing minutes throughout the rest of the season now that Dallas is firmly out of any type of playoff chase.
Cisse has played in 32 games with the Mavericks and averaged 3.8 points and 4.6 rebounds in nearly 12 minutes per contest. The undrafted point guard Nembhard has solidified himself as a building block next to No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg as he's averaged 6.7 points and 4.9 assists in 18.8 minutes per game over 38 appearances.
In Frisco with the G-League affiliate Texas Legends, recently-acquired Maverick AJ Johnson put on a show with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting on Saturday, his debut with the G-League team after being assigned by Mavs head coach Jason Kidd.
Johnson was acquired from the Washington Wizards as a part of the trade involving Anthony Davis at the deadline.
