The Dallas Mavericks are expected to revamp their roster this offseason, and one veteran asset could be on the way out.

The Dallas Mavericks did not enjoy the successes they were promised in the 2025-26 NBA season, but at least it ended with some degree of mercy. All eyes are on the NBA Draft Lottery, where the team is once again hoping to soar up the rankings, landing a top pick in a loaded class.

Of course, Cooper Flagg is the franchise centerpiece, and as he improves, the Mavs aren't expected to be bottom feeders for very long. Add in the return of Dereck Lively II and Kyrie Irving, plus a lottery pick, and Dallas could be in the playoff picture as soon as next season.

On top of that, the Mavericks have some trade chips they could cash in to bolster their young core. Naji Marshall, Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington, and even Max Christie would return picks or younger players, and the front office will have plenty of options.

On recently suggested idea would see the Mavericks make an odd move, but not one without precedent.

Newest Maverick On the Trade Block: Jason Kidd?

Marshall, Gafford, Washington, and Christie are all quality players, but would the Mavericks be able to fetch a first-round pick for them? Their value as role players isn't super high, plus they all seem to gel well with Flagg, which is a prerequisite for being on the team.

Jason Kidd, meanwhile, has gone back and forth on how much he knew about the Luka Doncic trade, and a new general manager might want to start anew.

When the Mavericks hire a new GM this summer, Kidd will still be under contract. He could simply be fired, although that would require the Mavs to buy him out, and he has value around the league as a proven coach. Keep in mind, he spent time leading the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks before heading to Dallas.

"Jason Kidd has already been traded once as a head coach, and while the Mavericks would like to hang on to him, they also shouldn't be completely attached," wrote Sports Illustrated's Austin Veazey. "He's an average coach. If he starts considering another team again, like he did last offseason with the New York Knicks, see if you can swing a deal for a few second-round picks."

Kidd - as a coach - was traded from the Nets to the Bucks in 2014 for two second-round picks. In 2007, the Miami Heat traded Stan Van Gundy to the Orlando Magic for two second-round picks, and in 2015, the Boston Celtics traded Doc Rivers to the LA Clippers for a first-rounder.

Coaches can only be traded for picks, not players (since coaches don't fall under the salary cap), and the coach has to sign off on it.

Kidd has flirted with other teams since being hired by the Mavs, and as coaching positions open up this offseason, moving on from Kidd is not totally off the table for the Mavericks.
