DALLAS - Well, it was fun while it lasted.
The Golden State Warriors - recently connected to the notion of trading for Dallas Mavericks oft-injured Anthony Davis - are no longer in that business as the Feb. 5 deadline approaches.
This news, according to NBA reporter Anthony Slater of ESPN, lines up with our belief that not even Davis deciding to not to undergo surgery on his left hand is being seen as much of a positive among potential bidders.
Even as it, AD is expected to miss at least six weeks with ligament damage.
“I sense zero appetite for that (trade) right now from the Warriors,” Slater said. “Not only trading for a guy, but you would very likely trade Draymond Green in that scenario. And it’s like, imagine trading Draymond Green for a guy who ... might be back around playoff time.”
Jonathan Kuminga has demanded a trade from the Warriors. ... and that is a fun name here. He’s been linked to the Mavericks and a handful of other potential suitors.
But it does seem there are too many moving parts for the Warriors ... which could leave the Atlanta Hawks and the Toronto Raptors as possible swap partners with the Mavericks.
Our Grant Afseth has noted that there are powers that be inside Mavs HQ who remain interested in seeing Davis (who turns 33 in March) play alongside rookie phenom Cooper Flagg and injured vet Kyrie Irving.
But we continue to argue that Dallas is better off conceding the season and "Organically Tanking'' its way toward the 2026 NBA Draft.
And why is this particular draft so key? It is the final draft in which the Mavs control their first-round pick ... all the way until 2031.
The 10-time All-Star Davis (making $54.1 million this season and eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension in August) has appeared in only 29 games with the Mavericks since the blockbuster Luka Doncic giveaway trade with the Lakers last season. ... and Dallas is not even treading water right now as the club is currently in 12th place in the Western Conference standings.
