The Mavs' new head coach has fielded his sideline of assists.
Dallas Mavericks head coach Dusty May has completed his coaching staff for the 2026-27 season as he enters his first NBA season.
The staff, which features a mix of recently-retired players and those with head coaching experience, includes Willie Green, Garrett Temple, Joe Boylan, Drew Williamson, Mody Maor, Rob Fodor and Sam Hershberger, the team announced Wednesday.
May joins the Mavs after a two-year stint at the University of Michigan, where he won a national championship last season. Dallas' first-round draft pick just one day after announcing May's hiring was former Michigan forward, Morez Johnson Jr.
Green serves as May's top assistant with NBA head coaching experience on his resume. He recently spent the last four seasons leading the New Orleans Pelicans - a tenure that includes two playoff appearances.
Last season, former Mavericks coach Jason Kidd also had a liking of his top assistant having head coaching experience as the veteran Frank Vogel assumed the role.
Temple comes to Dallas on the opposite end of that spectrum. After playing under Green in New Orleans, Temple is starting his NBA coaching career after an 18-year playing career. The former undrafted wing spent the last three seasons on the Toronto Raptors before announcing his retirement and move into coaching.
Boylan was previously an assistant coach on the Memphis Grizzlies. Boylan was the head coach of Dallas' Summer League team in Las Vegas a couple months ago, so he has an early look at Johnson and fellow first-round rookie Sergio De Larrea.
Williamson also has familiarity on his side. He follows May to Dallas after serving as an assistant coach for the Wolverines during the past two seasons. Michigan posted a dominant 37-3 record in total last season and produced three NBA lottery picks in the 2026 NBA Draft (Johnson at No. 9, Yaxel Lendeborg at No. 11 and Aday Mara at No. 12). Williamson's time with May dates back to their tenure at Florida Atlantic from 2021-24.
Like May, Maor is taking his first NBA job after leading Nagasaki Velca to a B.League championship in Japan this past season.
Fodor is a player development coach specializing in shooting with over two decades of experience with the Miami Heat organization. The top seven seasons in 3-point shooting in Heat history have come under Fodor's leadership.
Hershberger was previously an assistant coach with the Cleveland Charge, the Cavaliers' G-League affiliate. Hershberger worked with May while at the University of Florida as a graduate assistant.
Lastly, the Mavericks announced that Nate Mitchell will serve as the head coach of the G-League's Texas Legends this season. Mitchell has NBA work on his resume with the Charlotte Hornets, Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks. A native of Toronto, Mitchell has also been on the staff of the Canadian national team.
From a player development standpoint, the Mavericks will welcome back Tyson Chandler and Quincy Acy to similar roles.
Chandler was the starting center on the Mavs' 2011 NBA Championship team and has remained close with the organization as a skills trainer, predominantly with the big men. He's taking an especially close relationship with Dereck Lively II in recent years.
Acy, another former Mav, had a 10-year NBA career before beginning his coaching career started at Wichita State. He was with the Texas Legends before joining the Mavericks full time ahead of last season.
