This rookie sensation is already reshaping the Mavericks' universe, igniting hope for their future with electrifying performances and a historic scoring feat.
The Dallas Mavericks are 24-53 and have now lost eight of their last nine games, but that does not mean that their season has not been without its bright spots.
And the bright spot that is clear to anyone who is watching Dallas basketball is their 2025 No. 1 overall pick from Maine.
Flagg will be showcased in this Easter Sunday visit from the Los Angeles Lakers (50-27), a 6:30 p.m. game at the AAC in which old friend Luka Doncic won't play, as he's sidelined for the rest of the regular season with a hamstring problem.
In a recent article by Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley, he gives one word that he thinks describes every NBA team's season so far. For the Mavericks, he keeps it blunt.
Flagg.
"As will be the case in Dallas for the foreseeable future, the Mavericks' entire universe orbits around last summer's top pick, Cooper Flagg," Buckley writes. "Individually, he's still looking to gain ground in a Rookie of the Year race arguably led by his college teammate, Kon Knueppel. Flagg certainly won't get the nods for team success or shooting efficiency, so he'll have to continue impacting as many volume stat categories as possible."
Dallas already had its foundation in Dončić, one of the most dominant offensive forces in basketball. But after Nico Harrison struck, the team had to figure something else out. The basketball gods favored Dallas, and they got the first overall pick with just a 1.8 percent chance.
And the rest is going to be history.
Flagg is averaging just under 21 points, six rebounds, and four assists per game in his first season in the league. Many thought that he would need some time to adjust to the level of play in the NBA, but he picked it up pretty quick.
And despite the loss in the team's last game against the Orlando Magic, the former Duke phenom became the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 points a game with 51, as well as six rebounds and three steals.
And that’s why the one-word description works. "Flagg" isn’t just about potential hype—it’s about what we have already seen. It reflects a recognition that Cooper has already shown that he can be one of the best players at the highest level the game can be played at.
So while it may sound simple, the word carries real weight. For Dallas, it’s not just a label—it’s a blueprint.
