Mark Aguirre Honor Means Mavs Now Have Starting Five in Rafters cover image

Dallas to enshrine its fifth legend, completing an all-time starting five that boasts scoring prowess and undeniable talent.

Ever since the Dallas Mavericks retired the No. 41 for their greatest player ever in Dirk Nowitzki, they have not put a new number in the rafters.

But that is all going to change on Thursday when the Mavs take on the Charlotte Hornets at home, when they will be retiring the number of the player who is third on their all-time scoring list.

Mark Aguirre racked up 13,930 points in eight seasons for Dallas, even scoring just under 30 points per game in the 1983-84 season.

Retiring his number will mean that they now have five Mavericks in the rafters, and Aguirre himself made note of how good of a lineup they would all make if they played together.

"I make the fifth one? Wow. Hey, I make the fifth one," Aguirre said in a recent interview. "The starting five is complete. The all-time starting five. You got Dirk, you got Ro, you Derek, you got me, you got Brad. You got a starting five that you can’t deny. Score, rebound, play defense...

"Well, I wasn’t guarding anybody,'' he joked. "We’d play good help defense, me and Dirk."

The other four members of the starting five in the rafters are Rolando Blackman, Brad Davis, Derek Harper, and obviously Dirk.

When asked about who would take the last shot, Aguirre joked around a bit with his fellow Mavericks.

"I do," he said. "The players run from me... Well, I don’t know. With Dirk being up there, that’s saying a lot... I would not be upset if Dirk took it. But he would be the only one up there that I would say if he took it, I wouldn’t be upset. Anybody else up there, I’d say, no. You defer to me."

And his self confidence is not misplaced whatsoever.

Aguirre is one of the most underrated scorers in NBA history, as he is top 75 in scoring all-time and nobody seems to talk about it. But with his jersey going into the rafters, more people will know him and his game.

As far as retired number starting fives go, the Mavericks will now be able to say that they have one of the better ones in the league.
