Mark Cuban reveals the franchise icon questioned Nico Harrison’s hiring long ago, warning that existing player relationships weren’t enough to ensure the front office's long-term success.
For years, Dirk Nowitzki has been viewed as the ultimate voice of reason within the Dallas Mavericks organization. Recent comments from Mark Cuban suggest the franchise icon may have seen trouble coming long before many others did.
In a recent interview, the former Mavs Majority owner revealed that Nowitzki was not fully on board with the team's decision to hire Nico Harrison as the team's lead basketball executive in 2021.
According to Cuban, Nowitzki questioned whether Harrison's background and connections were enough to justify the move, even as Cuban believed those relationships would help Dallas attract top talent.
"Dirk didn't agree with everything that was going on," Cuban said. "I explained to him that I needed somebody who had relationships with players already... Like when he made the [Anthony Davis] trade, he knew him from the time he was 13. Dirk was like, 'Yeah, I don't know if that's the way to go.' To his credit, he called it."
The revelation adds another layer to the ongoing discussion surrounding Harrison's tenure with the Mavericks. While Nico helped oversee several successful seasons, including a trip to the NBA Finals, his time with the organization ultimately became defined by controversial decisions that alienated a significant portion of the fanbase. Cuban has since publicly acknowledged that hiring Harrison was a mistake in hindsight.
But after trading a generational talent like Luka Doncic, there's only so much apologizing that can be done.
