Rookie sensation Cooper Flagg joins Kyrie Irving to challenge Victor Wembanyama’s surging Spurs, as Dallas seeks revenge and a statement win in this high-stakes, nationally televised rivalry.
The Dallas Mavs head to San Antonio to take on the San Antonio Spurs in a nationally televised Texas trip on Wednesday as the Spurs look to repeat their early-season success against the Mavs.
And what will the Spurs be greeted by? Their first look at the present and future of your Dallas Mavericks.
Stephon Castle told the San Antonio Express-News of Irving and Flagg ...
"You add those two guys, it makes them a lot more dangerous."
The future? Flagg, who was the 19-year-old No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and winner of the Rookie of the Year award, looks to mold all of that into a All-Star career.
And the present? The combo setup with Irving, 34, has been key to having helped Dallas to a surprising 4-3 start to the regular season.
"There's a lot of moments when we realize we can help each other more," stated Flagg, who is averaging 26.8 points this season. "There's been a lot of learning experiences. But there's more and more we can do and alleviate some pressure and make it easier for one another."
Irving and Flagg both sat out for Dallas in their last matchup with San Antonio, which obviously made that Spurs 16-point win that much easier.
But on Wednesday, both Flagg and Irving are slated in the lineup.
Dallas' goal, short-term and long-term? To have Flagg and Irving counter Victor Wembanyama's full court dominance.
Keep in mind the Spurs are on a five-game win streak, another factor making them a scary opponent.
While it may be a bit early to issue rave reviews for Mavericks coach Dusty May. he is earning praise for his early work with this club, which without Irving last year was just a 26-game winner.
So what does Dusty think of the Flagg/Irving-led bunch, and what he has seen as the two stars begin to potentially shine together?
"We look like a team," May stated.
As the Mavs head to the Spurs home court on Wednesday, they will need all of that and more to beat the recent NBA Finals Spurs team.
