The Dallas Mavericks situation is probably not what they would have hoped for at the beginning of the season. As a result, the team could make a lot of big decisions this offseason.
And a recent article from Bleacher Report has them doing exactly that.
In a piece by BR's Greg Swartz where he gives what he believes is the perfect trade for every team in the NBA. And for the Mavericks, he thinks they should trade veteran point guard Kyrie Irving to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Jalen Suggs and Jonathan Isaac.
There were a lot of people who thought that Dallas should have traded Kyrie before this season's trade deadline, but they most likely would not have gotten the return they would have wanted with him being injured.
And there's one more thing. The veteran and the Mavericks' rookie sensation, Cooper Flagg, have not even gotten a chance to play together yet.
Don't you think they at least deserve that?
With Irving sidelined for the rest of the season rehabbing from an ACL tear that he suffered last season, a lot of the ball handling responsibilities have fallen on the shoulders of Flagg. And he has done a surprisingly excellent job with the added pressure.
The 19-year-old phenom is averaging 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists per game, and he is doing so on 47 percent form the field. His three-point shot may be a bit behind, but his ability to run the point effectively has more than made up for that at the moment.
Dallas traded Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards as part of a large deal that brought several players and draft picks back to Dallas. Those moves signaled a potential pivot toward flexibility and future assets rather than short-term contention.
But with all of the different roster looks the team has had just in the last couple seasons, might it be time for them to slow down and let one of their rosters play for a bit?
Or in this case, play together at all.
When Irving is on the floor, he has been excellent despite almost being 34 years old. He put up just under 25 points on some spectacular shooting percentages last season, which goes to show that this injury does not automatically mean it is time to give up on Kyrie.
While Dallas might ultimately decide to make another move this offseason to further build around Flagg, it could be something for the team to consider to let the two former Duke Blue Devils share the floor to see what they may have.
