Obnoxious, arrogant, occasionally selfish, divisive.
Those would all be great ways to describe Mark Cuban, espcially duruing the 20-plus years that he owned the Dallas M<avericks. However, despite some flaws, his commitment to winning, the city, and building the best possible roster was never questioned.
What more could you ask from an owner? His loyalty to Dirk Nowitzki was never once questioned.
Patrick Dumont and the Adelson family, who bought the Mavericks from Cuban in 2023 for $3.5 billion, do not seem to understand some basic principles: treat the fans' favorite players well, and you will be treated well by the fans.
After trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025, any goodwill between MFFLers and the new ownership group turned sour, and both Cuban and Nowitski issued some strong criticism, as well.
Originally planning to use their investment in the Mavericks to lobby for a casino in Dallas, it's becoming increasingly clear that the Texas House of Representatives has no interest in ever making the Lone Star State a gambler's paradise. As such, there have been reports that the Adelsons and Dumont are done with their shiny new toy.
The frontrunner to land the Mavericks if they are put up for sale? None other than Cuban himself.
Even if there is interest by the current ownership group to sell the team just three years after their initial purchase, they would play their cards close to their chest.
It seems they are doing just that.
“The Dumont and Adelson families remain fully committed to the Dallas Mavericks franchise and to the Dallas community,” an internal source to The Stein Line. “They remain focused on building a championship organization for the long term."
Hang on. The Adelson family bought the Mavericks in December 2023. Just six months later, the Mavericks were competing for a title against the Boston Celtics. They were already a "championship organization," headlined by Doncic, who seemed poised to do the unthinkable: pass Dirk as Dallas' GOAT.
Eight months after his Finals push, Dumont signed off on the trade that sent Luka to the Lakers. Since then, the Mavs have been living in the lottery. Even with Cooper Flagg leading the way, it will take a long time before they can top the Western Conference again. Words like "fully committed," "focused," and "champion organization" ring hollow.
Maybe the days of Cuban are missed, and fans would definitely prefer him leading the way, but Dumont has no interest in selling...for now.
“The team is not for sale, and the families look forward to expanding their ownership stake over time," the source reportedly added.
If it becomes even clearer that a casino attached to American Airlines Center is not and never will be a possibility, then discussions might be had. For now, the current ownership group is still billions in the hole, and until they recoup that investment, don't expect a sale anytime soon.
