The United States still has gold medals, but international stars have controlled the sport’s biggest individual conversations. Cooper Flagg gives USA Basketball the clearest young answer.
The last four years of international basketball have not belonged to America in terms of an individual player.
Nikola Jokic won the Paris Olympics scoring title. Victor Wembanyama turned the 2024 Games into a showcase for French basketball, leading the host nation to a silver medal. The United States won gold in Paris, but it did so with a veteran roster built around LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
The story extends beyond the Olympics. No American-born player has won NBA MVP since James Harden in 2018, with Jokic claiming three of the last six awards and Giannis Antetokounmpo winning two others and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander winning the last two . The next generation of American talent needs a face, Cooper Flagg is the most obvious candidate.
His USA Basketball history starts earlier than most people realize. In July 2022, a 15-year-old Flagg traveled to Malaga, Spain, for the FIBA Under-17 World Cup and was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 9.3 points, 10 rebounds, 2.9 blocks and 2.4 steals per game as the United States won gold.
In the championship game against Spain, he delivered 10 points, 17 rebounds, eight steals and four blocks in a 79-67 victory. USA Basketball named him its 2022 Male Athlete of the Year, making him the youngest player ever to win the award.
Two years later, in June 2024, USA Basketball named Flagg to the Select Team that trained against the full Olympic roster in Las Vegas ahead of the Paris Games. He was 17 years old, the only teenager on the roster and the first collegiate player to participate with the senior national team program since Doug McDermott and Marcus Smart in 2013.
He went up against James, Curry, Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid in practice before starting his freshman year at Duke and was able to lock them down. USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill called the move part of developing the national team pipeline for the future.
The 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar runs from Aug. 27 to Sept. 12, 2027. The United States has not yet officially qualified but is competing in the Americas Qualifiers, which run through March 2027.
Given the depth of American talent, its inclusion is expected. Flagg will be 20 years old by then, entering his third NBA season. His two-way profile fits exactly what international basketball demands from a lead forward.
The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles carry different weight entirely. A home crowd, Flagg at 21 years old and three full NBA seasons of development behind him set up the kind of moment that defines careers. James has carried USA Basketball for more than two decades. The program needs its next face and the timeline points directly at Flagg.
