The Dallas Mavericks have been at the center of NBA trade rumors this season, with Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and Daniel Gafford all getting their turn on the ride. After the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Davis, his welcome in Texas is wearing thin, as his frequent injuries and the end of his prime have him back on the trade block.
For now, the Mavericks seem happy with both Thompson and Irving on the roster, and Gafford is their best center after Dereck Lively II went down with a foot injury for the season. Davis is the hottest name on the trade block, and the Mavericks should have plenty of suitors.
The Atlanta Hawks have been linked to Davis, and could easily match his salary by flipping Trae Young to Dallas. One problem: Dallas doesn't want him.
Young is a great scorer and passer, but his defense is horrid, and when shots aren't falling, he's a negative asset. Still, some teams would be happy to have him as a second or third star, and the Mavericks need to rope them into a deal if they want to ship Davis to the Peach State.
The Heat have been linked to Young for many years, and while it's not a perfect fit, this trade does allow them to retain a core of Young, Tyler Herro, Norman Powell, Bam Adebayo, and Kel'el Ware with Jaime Jaquez Jr., Pelle Larsson, Nikola Jovic, and Simone Fontecchio coming off the bench.
Is it enough to hide Young's defensive shortcomings? Perhaps not, but the added offensive firepower doesn't hurt!
The Hawks, meanwhile, get another star to pair with Jalen Johnson. Barring injuries, a lineup of Dyson Daniels, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Johnson, Davis, and Kristaps Prozingis should be one of the best in the league, and they add backcourt depth pieces to pair with big men Onyeka Okongwu and Mouhamed Gueye off the bench.
Meanwhile, Dallas makes out like bandits. The Mavericks have no plans to go on a deep playoff run this season, but they will add to their young core. Cooper Flagg and Dereck Lively II are joined by former top pick Zaccharie Risacher and young point guard Kasparas Jakucionis, as well as two future picks to be used or traded down the road.
Plus, Andrew Wiggins can either play opposite to PJ Washington as an upgrade over Naji Marshall, or he can also be flipped in a future trade.
The Mavericks need to lay out a long-term plan to build around Flagg, and by avoiding Young's salary and any drama he brings with him, they manage to do just that while recoupling ample value for Davis before the deadline.
