Dallas could be weighing major roster changes this offseason, with several key veterans reportedly drawing trade interest around the league.
The Dallas Mavericks finished 26-56 last season and the offseason reset is moving faster than most people around the league expected. Marc Stein reported Friday on The Stein Line that Dallas is openly willing to trade Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford.
The phone lines are open and the front office is not pretending otherwise.
So ... it's a fire sale, maybe?
Thompson is the name that will generate the most calls according to Stein. He is 36 years old, averaged 11.7 points on 38.3% shooting from 3-point range this season in a reduced role and is entering the final year of his contract at $17.5 million.
An expiring deal from a four-time champion with a proven shooting track record is exactly what contenders spend the summer targeting. Whatever comes back in a Thompson trade is more valuable than another year of him in a rebuilding uniform.
Washington and Gafford are more complicated. Both signed extensions in the 2025 offseason and neither contract is easy to move on its own. Washington is owed $88.8 million over four years and Gafford is owed $54.4 million over three. Both are 27 years old and productive enough that teams will engage seriously.
Washington averaged 14.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.1 blocks this season and guards multiple positions. Gafford shot 65.5% from the field and remains one of the more efficient rim runners in the league. The market for both exists and Dallas is willing to find out what returns.
The more revealing part of Stein’s report is what he says about Kyrie Irving. The Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves have called. The answer has been no. Dallas is telling teams Irving is off the table while the front office evaluates what he looks like alongside Cooper Flagg when he returns from his ACL tear in the fall.
Irving carries a $39.49 million salary in 2026-27 with a $42.42 million player option the year after. Moving him without seeing the Flagg pairing play out would be premature and the organization knows it.
