Mikel Brown Jr. made an impressive preseason debut, but the Brooklyn Nets couldn't close out exhibition play with a perfect record. Michael Porter Jr. scored 27 points as Brooklyn surrendered 144 points to the Miami Heat in a disappointing finale.
The Brooklyn Nets saw their perfect preseason come to an end Wednesday night, falling 144-128 to the Miami Heat in their final exhibition game. Brooklyn entered the matchup with a 3-0 record but struggled defensively throughout the night, allowing Miami to score at least 32 points in every quarter.
Michael Porter Jr. led the Nets with 27 points, while Egor Dëmin added 17 points and Julius Randle finished with 15 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Rookie Mikel Brown Jr. also made his preseason debut, scoring 15 points off the bench.
Brooklyn struggled to contain Giannis Antetokounmpo, who came close to recording a triple-double. The Milwaukee star finished with 20 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists, while Andrew Wiggins added 19 points and six rebounds. Davion Mitchell contributed 13 points and four assists for Miami.
The Nets fell behind early after Miami opened the game with a 10-3 run. Porter Jr. helped keep Brooklyn within reach, scoring nine points in the first quarter, while Dëmin knocked down a pair of three-pointers. Brown also made an immediate impact in his first preseason appearance, hitting a three-pointer on his first shot before adding a layup on his next attempt.
Miami took a 35-29 lead into the second quarter, but Brooklyn responded with a much better offensive effort. Porter Jr. continued to find his rhythm, while Mo Wagner provided a spark off the bench. Day'Ron Sharpe also made an impact around the basket, scoring seven consecutive points during a stretch that helped the Nets close the gap.
Dëmin added a fast-break three-pointer late in the half, and Brooklyn went into the break trailing just 69-66 after outscoring Miami 37-34 in the second quarter.
The Nets continued to push after halftime. Porter Jr. knocked down another three-pointer, and Randle tied the game at 71 with a fast-break dunk before adding a layup on the following possession. Brooklyn eventually took its first lead since the opening minutes when Sharpe connected on a left-handed hook shot.
However, Miami quickly regained control. Ryan Conwell knocked down multiple three-pointers, while Klay Thompson and Wiggins helped the Heat build another lead. Miami outscored Brooklyn 43-37 in the third quarter, taking a 112-103 advantage into the final period.
Brown continued to show flashes of his offensive potential, finishing with 15 points. He opened the fourth quarter with a steal and dunk before adding another three-pointer later in the game. Nolan Traoré also finished with 12 points and four assists, while Sharpe recorded 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Brooklyn remained within striking distance early in the fourth quarter, but Miami pulled away as the Nets struggled to get stops. The Heat extended their lead as the Nets continued to play their starters before eventually emptying their bench. Traoré contributed several baskets down the stretch, including a dunk through contact, but Miami had already done enough to secure the victory.
The defensive performance will be the biggest concern for Brooklyn coming out of the loss. Miami finished with 144 points and repeatedly found opportunities around the basket, while the Nets were outrebounded 50-37. The Heat also played without their All-Star center, as Bam Adebayo sat out with right groin tightness.
Porter Jr. was one of Brooklyn's biggest positives, finishing with his highest-scoring total of the preseason. Dëmin also continued his encouraging start, while Brown gained valuable game experience after missing the first three exhibition contests with an ankle injury.
Randle, meanwhile, finished 4-for-13 from the field. The veteran forward had some productive moments after halftime, but Brooklyn will need more consistent shooting from him as the regular season gets underway.
The loss ends a preseason in which the Nets won their first three games against Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Washington before struggling to keep up with Miami's offense. While the final result was disappointing, Brooklyn got a look at Brown in game action and saw continued scoring production from Porter Jr. and Dëmin.
The Nets will now turn their attention to the regular season, opening at home against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m. ET. Brooklyn will have a few days to work on its defensive issues before the games begin to count.
