Egor Demin provided the magic touch from behind the arc against Orlando. He later banked Brooklyn's 93rd point from the right wing and helped force overtime.
The Nets rookie nailed five long-range baskets including that one from 26-feet with 5.6 left. But the Magic took the thrilling 104-103 win inside Barclays Center on Wednesday night.
Still, Demin stole the show under the New York city lights -- and hit a mark not seen since a young Kevin Durant.
"Egor Dëmin made two 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds of Q4/OT to tie or take the lead. He's the second rookie ever to do so in the same game (Kevin Durant on 4/6/2008)," the Nets' public relations department revealed on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
Demin hit five threes on the evening -- including banking a 25-footer with 3:18 to go in overtime. The former BYU Cougar still didn't rest his hands. He swished two more with under 1:07 left; one from 27 feet and the other touching 25 feet before falling inside the net.
Few first year NBA players deliver the kind of shooting stroke this early. Especially one standing at 6-foot-8 and looking more built for the low post.
Yet Demin told reporters postgame he's always envisioned these moments.
"When I was a kid I was shooting alone in the gym thinking about moments like this," Demin said via Erik Slater of ClutchPoints.
Turns out the NYC scrutiny doesn't overwhelm the 19-year-old Moscow, Russia native.
“I always feel like I was comfortable in these situations growing up," Demin said. "It’s almost like if I had a rough game, the end of the game would be easier for me to get my energy up. Because I’m like, if not me, who else?”
He's now in the Nets' record books. But additionally hit marks that LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony reached before along with others.
"It set the Nets franchise record for 3-pointers made in an OT period by any player (since tracking began in 1997-98) and tied the most by an NBA rookie, joining Tyler Herro, Brandon Knight, Walter Herrmann, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony," Slater added.
Demin rose as the second-leading scorer of the night behind Michael Porter Jr., who dropped 34 on Orlando. One of Brooklyn's five rookies now has surpassed double digits in scoring the last four games. Only this time his name is linked to some notable league legends including the former Nets star Durant.
